This book is unlikely one of those you will read cover to cover, but will rather open it at a random spot to read the lyrics of whichever song happens to be on that page, as well as the accompanying essay or impression; and then you will set it aside for another time.
It's that kind of book and, as such, will have a longevity that many books can't aspire to. It's a meditational book. Read the lyrics; read the impressions; think about it; enjoy.
GATHERED LIGHT is a must read for people interested in Music Culture of the 20th Century, in popular culture in general, and in the way words and music combine together to create poetry of the spirit.
"GATHERED LIGHT the Poetry of Joni Mitchell's Songs" elucidates the work and influence of Mitchell on a group of about 50 authors, musicians, scholars and others who range in age from their 20s to their 70s.
The book looks at her influence and her accomplishments from many different perspectives. There are revelations about her personal life but mostly about her life as a writer and her influence on other writers.
Mitchell is sometimes considered a "confessional songwriter" but in fact she is looking for a more universal truth than the mere confession of intimate details about her personal life.
These writers speak both to and about the poetry of Joni MItchell's songs. -- Edmond Chibeau
