After seeing this series in a gift shop in FL I ordered Vol 1 and 2. I loved Volume 1 because it had nice dinner and tabletop/decor ideas. The author is an interior designer so she truly left her special touch on the tablescapes and use of china. Volume 2 is less decor and more dinner and folksy entertaining ideas.

The book is laid out in "Gatherings: Week One through Five" for roughly 133 pages. Dinners and recipes with the grocery shopping list included, but for a week at a time. In Vol.1 the shopping list was for a stand alone dinner. Why shop for a week of dinners if you aren't going to do each one? So if you follow the author's list you are either buying items you don't need or you have to comb through the recipes for a shopping list of your own - which is what we would normally do.

The photographs are lovely and the presentations nice, but not as nice as Vol. 1.

This book really shines in the salad and dressing department. She includes a number of everyday salads - but I forget about them and its nice to have them in a cookbook complete with made from scratch dressings. Her salads include Waldorf Chicken, Tortellini Turkey, Santa Fe Salad, Turkey Penne, Bacon Potato, Spring Shrimp, and there is a homemade dressing to go with each one. I've already made a few and they are easy and tasty.

There is also a chapter on Effortless Dishes, Savory Beginnings, Wholesome Soups, and Enchanting Desserts.

I bought this used on Amazon and its a nice addition to my kitchen cookbook collection.

I'm reading this, not just looking at the pictures, page by page. All the recipes are so simple and the presentations very impressive. Great photography. So I am very much enjoying them (I got two of the books) and hope to follow up, using them to entertain.

While the recipes seem equally intriguing (although some more complicated) some of the "fat" that was trimmed for Vol 2 was the "decor" tips. While this may suit many people just fine, the simple centerpieces and fun party helpers were one of the things that I enjoyed the most about Vol. 1. Maybe it's just me, but for a book that has increased (considerably) in cost from the original, I would think the content would have at least remained... If I could, I would give it a 3.5, but that's not an option...

This is an excellent book! I love it! I have combed the pages over and over again! My friends all ask, "where did you get this, I want one" - Can't go wrong!

A few weeks ago I saw what I assume was the latest book in this series "The Gathering of Friends" in a little gift shop. I flipped through, but my hubby was ready to go, so I wasn't able to get an in depth look. I knew I could probably find them cheaper on amazon anyway, so I scanned the book and went on. I began looking them up the next week and ordered volumes 1 and 2. I received them earlier this week and finished up reading volume 2 today. The first 3/4 of the book is separated into weeks and then subdivided into day 1, day 2, etc. Each day consists of 4 or so recipes--usually a main dish, a salad, an additional side, and a bread. The last 1/4 of this book has sections of recipes such as "soups," "salads," and "deserts." I was a little apprehensive because these books seemed "fancy," which usually translates to "fancy" recipes I don't want to cook and my boys won't touch with a 10 foot pole anyway. I was pleasantly surprised with volume 1. I tend to be a "from scratch" girl, and, though there were some shortcuts such as pre-packaged rice, the recipes were mostly ingredients I normally keep in my pantry. Volume 1 contains lots of simple, effortless recipes that I think my family will actually enjoy. Volume 2, not so much. The recipes in volume 2 are a lot more "fancy" and, quite frankly, not what we like to eat. I marked a few pages in volume 2, but my expectations are not very high. Out of the whole book, I am really only looking forward to trying the italian night which consisted of lasagna and homemade meatballs. One thing I have noticed about these books, especially volume 2, if you like to eat a lot of different salad combinations and make your own dressing, this book holds a lot of recipes for both of those things.

The best things about this book are the pictures. It shows in great detail what the food looks like(or what it should look like after cooking). Fairly simple recipes. Love it!!

Not really an entertaining cookbook like the others in the series. I like the series for the beautiful ideas for setting and large recipes. This one was geared more to weeknight meals. The dessert recipes looked good, but the others weren't useful to me.
