The Prey series always focused, even doted on the people in the stories, even describing their appearance in each book. Jenkins, Shrake, Sloan, Del, Marcie, Weather, Virgil and Lucas all were fleshed out and the interplay among them gave you characters you knew and dialogue that rang true, among them and the police, politicians, and others they dealt with. Now there is mostly no interaction between the characters, and most seem to be stock figures advancing the plot, another cop or the wife. While the crimes are interesting the core of the series, the characters are gone and forgotten like Marcie.

John Sandford stands out among his contemporaries in that he has built the world of Lucas Davenport over a span of 25 books, from "Rules of Prey" to "Gathering Prey", that continues to be fresh, without a predictable formula, that provides twists and turns, keeping the reader interested from cover to cover.

In "Gathering Prey" the characters wander from place to place presenting Lucas Davenport with a puzzle to solve. The story is well paced, there is ample action and surprises in a story that builds to a believable climax.

A very satisfying read.

I've read all of the Prey books and this 25th one is among the very best of the series. I have been waiting for Letty, Lucas's adopted daughter, to become more of a character in these books and with this one she does. She has a major supporting role to Lucas. We start off with Letty in California, about to leave for the summer as she's just finished her freshman year at Stanford. She sees two young people who are Travelers and gets them some food. They tell her about a Charles Manson like gang operating out of California. The leader's name is Pilate and he has about 20 followers. Letty goes home to her family in Minnesota. She left her cell phone number with the travelers and when she next hears from one of them that summer, Pilate's gang is in full swing and headed in a north easternly direction across the country.

Pilate's gang is as bad or worse than Manson's and this draws Lucas into the case. Pilate is from L.A. and used to doing his crime binges there. We criss cross through South Dakota, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan's Upper Peninsula as Lucas and Letty follow the gang.

I loved the UP part of the story especially. I've been to the UP in Michigan. You have to be incredibly hearty and hale to live there. There are all outdoors people. They all own a gun and know how to use guns. There is a huge amount of land comprising the UP with only 3% of the state of Michigan living there. This is not where you go to live if you are a wimp. Its summers are cool, when this story takes place, and its winters are brutal.

Added into this mix is a bunch of people called jugaloos who travel all around staging festivals where they don face paint, play music, hang out and a fair amount of dope is smoked.

I was looking forward to another installment in the Davenport series. What I got was a tale of mindless, sadistic violence with lengthy development focusing on a bunch of mindless, sadistic psychopaths. The body count keeps growing while our hero chases the bad men all over the United States. We know he will get them, we know they will die or be caught, we know he will live to fight another day. It is all so predictable. Of course, there is something mesmerizing in this foray into crazy America, but is this a novel? Lucas wisecracks his way from one state to another, meets some great people ready to ride along with him, but there is so little personal about him that he could be some generic character. The fact that he has a baby son is mentioned briefly once, his wife is hovering in the background, and much is made about their adopted daughter who seems to be groomed to have her own books soon. There are hints about changes in the next installment. We can only hope.

I've read all of the Prey novels and have loved them. Sadly, the rich character development present in the earlier novels is missing and the plot is predictable and the violence is gratuitous (all of the novels are violent but this is excessive). I still loved going along for the ride but I miss the experience of the earlier novels.

Used to be a big fan. I'm done with Sanford. He just doesn't pack the gear anymore. Maybe he should kill Leddy off. There's nothing endearing about her.. Don't bother with this if you loved the early Prey series. It doesn't compare and will most definitely disappoint.

I'm done. This is a boring predictable book. Through 24 books Mr. Sandford has established rich interesting characters that we who have read them all have come to love. The characters in this book have all the depth of paper dolls. Weather, Del,Jenkins and Shrake how I miss you.

I too have read all the prey books and think back on the stories as fun memories. Unfortunately, Gathering Prey is missing the heartbeat. The bad guy was not well developed with any needs or motivations so I was not particularly hating him. Lucas is in a wonderful solid place in his life so he was never as emotional as he has been in other books. Letty is interesting and should maybe have her own series. I read the book for Lucas. The best part was his dialogue with Sands when Lucas shows his temper. I'll still be waiting for the next book though!
