The down side, or things I'd like to see a little differently... The two mesh pockets don't expand enough to be very functional and the are too narrow to get a capo into. The innovative little holder on the pocket zipper holds one pick, but only a small (typical) size pick. Yes, I like larger, triangle picks. Also, its grip on the pick is not positive and I've had it fall out with normal handling of the case. Finally, the larger pocket could have a bit more room (expansion). I am able to get a 8.5"x11" notebook binder in it, but it is a tight fit. If I fill the binder to capacity, it would not longer fit. I'd also like to see a pocket on the guitar neck portion of the case.
All in all, it is a great case and much better than many others I have seen. It definitely measures up to Gator's normal high quality. In spite of what I don't like, the overall quality and fit of the case is sufficient to make glad I bought it.
-I own a full scale boutique style 5 string bass guitar(24 frets, 35" scale), and this case fits it perfect. I would venture to say that there are very few electric basses that would not fit in this case.
-Feels tough and well constructed. Has extra layers of padding that make it unusually well padded for a soft case, while still being easier to haul around than a hard case. The extra padding at the bottom is a nice touch.
-Has a single zip-up pocket on the front, with a netted pouch inside it. The size is reasonable. It would fit a couple small textbooks, a tuner, etc. Nothing crazy, but good for a soft case.
Two reasons for 4 stars instead of 5:
-First, the extra padding at the bottom seems to be made of that really soft microfiber stuff. I wish the entire inside of the case was made of that stuff, instead of the nylon. And I'd be willing to pay extra for that.
-Second, the shoulder straps seem to be too low. I'm 5'9'', and I have to duck to avoid hitting the top of by bass on doorways. I've tried loosening the straps as far as they'll go, but that creates other problems. IMO the straps ought to have been placed higher on the case, which is a bummer because I was looking forward to being able to backpack my bass around. I still can, of course, but I have to watch out. Not a deal-breaker for me, but worth mentioning. Also this could be a normal problem that I was just not aware of until now.
Overall this is a really good case in the realm of soft cases. It raises the bar, while retaining the classic advantages of a soft case(lightweight, takes up less room, etc.) as compared to a hard case.
- this case has a label with California Proposition 65 warning (contains harmful chemicals) - this is NOT shown in the item description on Amazon, while it should, so beware;
- if you have a tremolo bridge on your guitar you would need to unscrew the tremolo handle in order to fit it into the case; if you use the case often this may become very annoying;
- this case fits most regular-shaped electric guitars, but I'm not sure about the large extreme shapes (didn't try it for them); it perfectly fits B.C. Rich Villain Veil with 25,5" scale and 24 frets, leaving about one inch of extra space in length. The guitar sits very well inside when the case is closed, no wiggling.
Overall it's a good case, but why they use harmful chemicals in materials and not put it in the description? For me it's a concern.
