What I noticed first about Gauntlet was Ellery Prime’s refreshing writing style. Prime engages the reader with sharp, vivid descriptions that showcase a complexity web of intrigue, horror, and action with a clarity rarely seen in modern fiction. She leaves nothing and somehow everything to the imagination, where you can see the awesome world Prime created but you cannot expect what will come next. But that is the beauty of Gauntlet, a horror-infused thriller where reality is lost to a pseudo-game with no rules, no do-overs, and no two-player option.

Prime creates an effortless familiarity with the characters. Immediately, we are introduced to Clio, an idealistic girl who moves to the Big City to follow her dreams, but what she finds, isn’t the classic stereotype of broken promises and harsh truths. With the “help” of two young men, Black Jack and Red Jack, Clio finds herself drawn into a medieval/steampunk/futuristic reality where she meets Britt, a street-smart survivor who’s been in the Gauntlet for some time; August, a “prince” in a Gauntlet who captures Clio’s eye and heart; and Chance, August’s crafty right hand man. With only a bracelet to help guide her, Clio has to combat these interesting, mysterious “players” who either help or detract Clio from her only mission – to get out.

But is out where Clio wants to be? As Clio delves deeper and deeper into the mystery of the Gauntlet and who controls it, she realizes all her hopes and dreams she had coming to the Big City when she finally decides to stop running and to start playing.

A thriller mixed with horror, romance, and more than a dash of humor, Gauntlet is a game not to be missed.
