The double BAFTA-winning comedy Gavin & Stacey proves that falling in love is never as simple as boy meets girl. Written by and starring Ruth Jones (Little Britain, Nighty Night) and James Corden (The History Boys), this series follows the trials and tribulations of two young lovers as they embark on a whirlwind romance that brings their nations, and their families, crashing together. Gavin is an ordinary boy from England, Stacey is an ordinary girl from Wales, but when these two fall in love, the peculiar personalities of their families and friends make it a rocky road to happiness. The complete collection, including seasons one, two, and three, as well as the 2008 Christmas Special, follows the couple through their first encounter, wedding day, and hopes of having a baby, not to mention the hilarious antics of their families and best friends along the way. For Gavin and Stacey, there will be no such thing as "ordinary" ever again.]]>

For the first series, which we already had on DVD, everything seemed fine. The quality of the DVD was excellent and we had no complaints.
However in episode 5 of the second series, without really giving anything away, there is a barn dance. One of my family's favorite scenes is when Nessa and Bryn start singing Islands in the Stream while everybody else does a great country dance until Jason shows up. You can only imagine our surprise then when Nessa and Bryn announce they are going to sing a song and then all of a sudden Jason shows up. There is no song, there is no dance. We thought it might have been a fluke so we kept watching.
In the season finale, however, another scene was cut. I immediately contacted Amazon.com assuming that my disk must be defective. They sent me out a new set immediately but when I went to play it this evening, those scenes were missing again. I started comparing the disk lengths of the PAL or UK versions of the disks to the NTSC or USA versions and I was astounded at what I found.

What began as a charming romance morphed into one of the sturdiest ensemble comedies that you're likely to encounter. It is hard not to be caught up in the sweetness and hilarity that defines the world of "Gavin & Stacey." In just three short seasons (only 19 episodes), the show was able to carve out an intricate portrait of family and friendship with universal appeal. Ostensibly, the show began as a vehicle to establish the long distance romance between the titular leads Gavin (the effective Matthew Horne) and Stacey (the effervescent Joanna Page). Gavin lives with his parents in Essex while Stacey and her clan are Welsh. Although not a huge geographical distance, much of the comedy derives from a culture clash of sorts. Gavin, still in a protracted adolescence, pals around with his boyhood friends while Stacey is still very much tied to her family. But after they meet cute, there is no going back for the love struck couple!
The first season deals extensively with the logistics of the long distance courtship. To commit to one another, the couple's relationship has a resoundingly huge affect on everyone else in their lives. The course of true love never runs entirely smooth, however, but a duo this endearing deserves a bit of happiness. Season Two has taken the relationship to the next level and the pair must now contend with choosing just one place to live. The resultant strain, once again, has long range repercussions for the extended families. And Season Three progresses the couple even further with another move and a life changing announcement.Read more ›
Gavin and Stacey is one of my all time favorite TV shows that I refuse to delete from my TiVo and have found myself watching over and over and over and over again. For the longest time only season one was available in the United States on DVD so I am beyond delighted that they have finally made a series collection of all the episodes. Pre-order done.
Now all we need is series 4.
Gavin & Stacey: The Complete Collection is a repackage of the three standalone seasons plus Christmas special, presented in a cardboard sleeve. Audiences get the entire show run, from start to finish in one convenient package, which is absolutely the way to be consuming this show: marathon sessions consuming entire series in single afternoons.
Presented in stereo Dolby Digital, the audio is clear and unremarkable. Dialog is well-balanced and environmental noises feel well-placed and accurate. Bass response is minimal, and English SDH subtitles are included--which can be helpful for some of the thicker Welsh accents. The pop soundtrack fits the series well.Read more ›
