From Library Journal
San Francisco, or Sodom by the Sea, as it has sometimes been called, has had a thriving gay and lesbian community for as long as people have been inhabiting the Bay area. Published to coincide with the April 18 opening of the Gay and Lesbian Center of the San Francisco Public Library, Gay by the Bay offers a deluxe tour of the city's queer history in words and many, many pictures. From fantastic 16th-century accounts of Amazon warriors to the radicalization of the Castro in the 1960s to the rallying cries of Queer Nation and the broad-based diversification of the gay and lesbian community in the 1990s, this title lovingly captures the flavor of a city most queers call home. Because of the limited geographical scope of the book, purchases will probably be limited to the Bay area, although it should be required reading for any gay or lesbian studies student and should be a necessary purchase for libraries with strong gay and lesbian collections. I left my heart in San Francisco. High on a hill, it calls to me. To be where little cable cars climb halfway to the stars. The morning fog may chill the air, I don't care. My love waits there in San Francisco... Words by Douglass Cross Music by his lover, George Cory Copyright 1954 by General Music Publishing Co., Inc.

This arrived in perfect conditon. I couldn't have asked for anything better. I am very happy with this purchase. The seller takes a lot of time and effort to make sure that something arrives in great shape. Thank you.

It is difficult to find great historical images and oral history - this is so helpful and accessible! I recommend it to anyone looking or queer historical research of the Bay or if you have an interest in local history of the Bay.

A real eye opener of what a sub-culture of our society had to live with. Shameful.

Gay by the Bay, A History of Queer Culture in the San Francisco Bay Area is a jewel of book. The quality of production is high throughout this 165 page volume. The individual pages are well designed with frequent use of sidebar comments to complement the central narrative. Ample white space and hundreds of seldom-seen photographs, in color and in black and white, make each page a delight to view, read, and revisit. The authors, Susan Stryker and Jim Van Buskirk, allow their story-telling to proceed both with a narrative and a visual account. Either could stand alone, but combined they offer a treasure trove of all facets of queer culture.
The content is remarkable in its sweep. Unlike several other histories of the LGBTQ experience, Gay by the Bay is fully inclusive of the diverse community. Here readers will find the full spectrum of identities, preferences, and experiences, including Asian/Pacific lesbians, African American gay men, gay Muslims, and Latin dykes. The leather community, the royal court, queer youth, sex workers, punk artists – all become part of the whole in this comprehensive account. The nuances of several historical periods are here as well – from the less-know pre-WWII era through the war years, liberation, the lure and reality of assimilation, and the HIV/AIDS plague years.
The richness of this important contribution to LGBTQ history results from access to San Francisco’s extensive archives maintained by the GLBT Historical Society and the San Francisco Public Library. Both authors have helped manage and guide these collections. With the rapid gentrification underway in the San Francisco Bay Area, this historical account helps preserve the culture as well as document the sites of innumerable LGBTQ events that would otherwise be literally lost or forgotten. Now what is needed is a Volume II to pick up where Gay by the Bay left off in 1995. There’s 20 more years of queer culture to celebrate and preserve.

What an excellent book about one of my favorite places on earth! I was especially impressed by the authors' commitment to archiving the history of the LGBT movement but highlight the contributions and challenges that people of color within the LGBT community have brought to the achievements and complexities of the LGBT community. Also, an abundance of pictures, captions, and graphics to assist in chronicling such a rich and diverse movement. Bravo!

As a long time gay resident of San Francisco, I was thrilled when this historical pictoral tome came out way back then.
I bought the book and have it sitting proudly on my coffee table - after all these years.
It has great text and even more wonderful photos of personalities and memorabilia from decades of historical gay & lesbian San Francisco. Van Buslkirk and Stryker know their stuff and I appreciate all the research and the historical facts that come out in this masterfully produced work.
The photos are well reporduced and there is even the great reprodcution of the hilarious 1982 SURRENDER DIANE campaign poster from Sister Boom Boom's historical SF supervisorial run against then and unpoular Mayor Diane Feinstein. Classic. BUY THIS BOOK.

San Francisco par ses marges
Reviewed in France on June 28, 2015
A découvrir.
