I absolutely loved "confessions of a window dresser", loved some of Simon Doonan's other books, died laughing with his TV show "beautiful people", and I also love everything Jonathan Adler so I obviously bought the book as soon as it came out.
Huge mistake. I don't like Simon Doonan anymore. His book is condescending to women, seems like it's been written by a bitter middle aged guy, and worst of all, it's not funny. At all.
I've tried my best but I had to put it down.

Granted, there are certain things a book geared towards a gay audience must provide - fashion, girlfriends and lifestyle faux pas' being some of the most vital ones - but come on. I caught myself chuckling to some remarks - and although wanting to throw the book across the room many a time (for shamelessly sticking to the gay stereotypes, of course), I was captured. Doonan definitely has a voice - and a funny one at that. Just because I don't agree with the fact that all us gay guys live and die for fashion, doesn't mean that it isnt funny. After all, what did I expect - picking up a book with a man in a flower shirt on the cover? No florals in my closet. I give it 3 stars as I got through three chapters and found them funny. However, since the theme/content did not change that deep into the book - nor did the author offer anything else (humor included) that I have heard/read a thousand times before, I cast it aside. Would I recommend it, sure thing. Would I buy friends a copy? Nope. I think its time to move beyond the overdone stereotypes.

The snarky ramblings of a self-important, self-indulgent, self-appointed gay guru. An amusing premise, that gay men are simply smart & stylish French women with penises, is tortured and dragged out (pun intended) into an endless, superficial stream of drivel. Barney's needs a new fashion director and this publisher needs better authors. Tasteless, humorless, and sans style. Don't burn your money by buying it. Should be placed on the express cart to the remainder table where it will instantly crumble into a heap of fluff and further poison the environment!

As a gay man who has been out of the closet for more than 30 years, this was the most ridiculous book I have ever read. For a small elite segment of the population, the book may be erudite, witty, snarky, and bitchy. But I thought it was a tired look at an ever decreasing size of the gay population which is tired, boring and not representative of today's culture!! It was a waste of time and money, even at Amazon's generously reduced prices. Saved your time and your money.

Just fablous, hilarious stories that are laugh out loud funny. Loved reading about his childhood escapdes in England. Never saw any of his windows in person but his real talent is story telling and communicating. A very entertaining book full of sweet memories, and crazy adventures. Just wish it were longer and told more about the people he worked with.

I bought this book because the title is funny and my friend recommended it. I am gay and thought I could probably use some lessons. I quickly realized I am not the type of gay this book wants me to be. It is for your more fashion driven, meticulous gay. That's not me. It was well written and had some laughs though.

I agree that this book isn't as charming as some of Doonan's other writing, but it's still funny. The tone can be nasty at times in a way that can exclude the reader, which, as a writing style, I frankly don't understand. Nevertheless, one expects Doonan to be saucy and this book certainly is. The writing on which foods are gay, straight, or lesbian was hilarious, and I'm reminded of it all of the time. My tip: get it used and pay just a few bucks for it. This is good for an airplane or a night in but not a real keeper.
