The monitor's HDMI socket is a Micro HDMI Type D.
The monitor's VGA socket is a Micro HDMI Type D.
The monitor's power socket is a USB 2.0 Type Micro-B.
The only problem is that the supplied HDMI and USB cables protrude horizontally from the monitor, as does the VGA adapter cable's connector. This not only takes up additional desk space, more importantly it puts the sockets on the monitors circuit board at risk of damage if the connectors are forced in any direction once plugged in to the monitor, "Down Angle" connectors present less risk.
It was difficult to find the exact "Down Angle" extension cables, but I did they are as follows:
I purchased the following "Down Angle" HDMI Type D and USB 2.0 Type Micro-B extension cables from www dot usbfirewire dot com. The cables were shipped immediately and delivered as promised. To my knowledge this vendor's products are not sold on Amazon.
The cables are top quality, about 5 inches long, worked perfectly, and provide a toward the rear orientation for connecting the monitor's VGA and USB sockets.
1. Vendor: www dot usbfirewire dot com
2. USB 2.0 Down Angle Micro-B to Micro-B Female Extension Cable, Part number: RR-MCBD-EXT-05GL5 Price: $12.95
3. Down Angle Micro HDMI Extension, Part number: RR-7D-7F-05G, Price: $9.95
For one, I am using it as a second screen for my first-gen Macbook Air. It gives me better working space without the need to find an extra outlet since it just plugs into the USB drive for power. (I did have to get the HDMI adapter but I knew that). I also use it as a control monitor for my DSLR when I set it up in the studio to be able to show video to the talent. I also use it for playback of HDMI capable devices like other digital camera's or the Raspberry Pi. I'm trying to find the right adapter to connect it to my android phone as well. I hope to use it with a portable television switchboard soon.
The size and weight is perfect. It fits into my "small" Timbuk2 Command Laptop Messenger Bag (snug). The screen has a plastic cover that is usable as a stand and while the position is not changeable, it still works fine. I figured if I ever needed anything else, I would get the suggested GeChic stand.
The resolution can be disheartening when you work with (or next to) high-res screens, but I knew about this when I ordered it and am ok with that. Viewing angle is straight on, anything sideways will give you false color or no image at all. I see that more of a privacy benefit (People in a cafe don't need to see what I do?) than a problem.
Lastly, the main reason I decided on this version vs. the one with the build-in battery is because I already had a voltaic 10.000mAh portable battery. Other batteries are available from Amazon which are "bigger" and cheaper than the added cost of the build-in version. I figured, this way, the screen is lighter and cheaper and if the battery ever died, I could easily replace it versus having to haul around a screen with a broken internal one.
The hdmi is great - i simply plugged it in and everything worked. Several of my coworkers have asked about the monitor and they universally love the concept.
The monitor is light and thin enough that it fits easily in my computer bag, and causes no issues at airport security checkpoints.
I would heartily recommend this monitor to anyone who is looking for a good portable secod monitor.
