Sadly, it has about a 2 inch overhang where the buttons are on the far left. This prevents it from being stored safely in a standard laptop bag. Also, the monitor does not include a protective sleeve.
If GeChic would create a simple hard plastic sleeve to protect this monitor while travelling (like the Lenovo,) and eliminated the overhang for the buttons (buttons aren't needed - Windows can handle these functions - or place the button in the back) then this would be a best seller, worldwide.
The technology is there. The option for travelling needs to be incorporated.
If you are not planning on moving this monitor, it's an easy 5 stars. The price is reasonable considering that the 1080p Asus MB168B+ sells on Amazon for $250, and doesn't include touch or IPS. But the Asus is portable, hence sold out on most places online.
GeChic, are you reading this? You are close to creating the perfect Windows 8 USB *portable* monitor.
Overall, I very much like this monitor. It is incredibly easy to set up, works very well, has a wonderfully bright, crisp image, and the touchscreen works flawlessly.
+ Very crisp and bright picture.
+ 1920x1080 is a huge benefit in a portable screen this size.
+ Very fast turn on.
+ Works reliably through HDMI (no drivers necessary for video)
+ Reliable and accurate touchscreen (touchscreen drivers were already built-in to my Win 7 computer).
+ Receives power from 1 USB port (but has a Y-cable in case your laptop cannot provide sufficient power)
+ Comes with extra USB cable
+ Feels solid and is lightweight enough and thin enough to be portable.
+ A bracket can be purchased to make this screen VESA compatible. Not common amongst portable monitors.
// Stand works very well, but is limited to two positions (standard landscape and reclined landscape)
// May be a bit larger than some folks are expecting. For me, it fit perfectly fine in my 17" laptop backpack.
// The price is a bit high, turning away some potential customers. However, given how well the product is performing, I personally do not mind.
- No long-term case is provided (only the small protection sleeve it is packaged with). I had to purchase a separate case. I would recommend the BUILT 17-Inch Wide Neoprene Laptop Sleeve (see http://www.amazon.com/BUILT-17-Inch-Neoprene-Laptop-Sleeve/dp/B003FSTAKA).
- The form factor is a bit long (the screen size is 15.6" and then there's a large area with buttons to the left of the screen)
Overall, I would recommend this product to anyone who wants a second or portable monitor. Even for those who want a 15" monitor at home for a desktop computer, this monitor would work very well.
It was a surprise to me. It works well in mirroring mode. Just like any touch interface but I don't see any controls for it, so it's limited to tap, tap and drag. I can see an applet soon for this.
Now, it's possible that this is Gechic's work, but I sincerely doubt it. I had seen a thread about touch support in Yosemite, but wanted to see for myself.
As far as the device, I just got it and will come back and edit the review soon. Screen looks good (It should for what it cost LOL )
UPDATE: Changed from 4 to 5 stars. This monitor is very good IPS screen. It's very solid and touch works really well on both the Mac and Windows machines. It's a little bulky, with the bezel, but not
to bad. One thing worth mentioning. This is much different than most other portable monitors, in that it's a HDMI regular IPS monitor, that can be powered with a USB port, and is built for portability.
The fact that it's HDMI means it will not take up 20 to 30% of your cpu just to drive it. The other USB portable monitors are resource hogs, which always bugged me a little if I was using very intesive
applications. I bought this for a steep discount, but I also had that Asus HD + USB portable monitor that they are now selling for a stiff $300 US (they were $200). This Gechic is twice as good as that one.
In order to use it with the Surface, a display link mini to a HDMI and then reducing it to a micro HDMI cable is necessary. Also, because the USB port doesn't supply enough power, I found a USB extension cable made it possible to plug straight into the power brick that came with the Surface.
