What's in the box? Two GearLight flashlights. Two AAA battery cages. Two "clear" 18650 battery tubes. Two belt holsters. One user manual.
Batteries are not included.
I already own several flashlights just like this one. There's the A100 (Refun, Outlite). There's the Juslink. There's the E6 (Refun, Outlite) etc.. etc.. And now there's the GearLight... just another ho-hum, nothing to get excited about, dime-a-dozen, no-frills LED flashlight.
What does it do?... the same thing every OTHER generic light does. Three regular modes and two flashing modes. And again, (just like all the others) the different between the three modes is almost negligible. The head moves forward and backward to change the beam size. In full "focus" (just like ALL the others) the beam pattern is rectangle...BECAUSE...that's the shape of the LED! Speaking of the LED...it appears to be a T6 (which is standard on generic lights), but does NOT appear to be made by "Cree" (the standard LED manufacturer).
Basic operation; click the switch to turn it on/off. While it's on, lightly press again to toggle through the modes. The sequence is high, medium, low, strobe, SOS. As with ALL these lights, there's no "mode memory", so from whichever mode you turn it OFF in, it DEFAULTS to high, for the NEXT time you use it. It it HAD mode memory, it would come back on in low or medium (if either of those modes were used last). Strobe and SOS would NOT be memorized even if it DID have memory.
Let's talk about output. The name of the light is "S1000". To the layman, and to others who've answered the question regarding "how many lumens" (within the answered question area) S1000 insinuates 1000 lumens. WRONG!!! The GearLight is NO BRIGHTER than all the other generic lights!! Nowhere within the description or in the manual are lumens mentioned.
Among the attributes written on the box;
-- Water Resistant. Since it doesn't say to what degree, obviously it isn't waterPROOF. So DO NOT submerge it.
-- Shock Resistant. Since it doesn't say to what degree -- I did my own drop-tests. I dropped it SIX different times, all from waist height. It was dropped onto thick carpeting. Then dropped to a tile floor. Then dropped onto pavement. Surprisingly, it survived all of them with no fluctuation in performance. What DID happen, is an area on the head became scuffed, and the coating is now chipped (see photo).
-- Super Bright. It's about 300 lumens, which is much the same as every OTHER generic light.
-- AAA Battery. Like every other flashlight of this type, you can use either 3 AAA's or 1 18650 rechargeable. Since we do not know what the working voltage of the lights are, it's not recommended to use either two CR123 disposables, or two 16340 rechargeable batteries. Alternatively with AAA's, you can also use 1.2 volt NiMH rechargeable cells. I did a side-by-side comparison with one light using an 18650 and the other using three NiMH's. I saw NO discernible difference in output. This contradicts SOME similar lights, which are brighter with an 18650.
I did some comparisons with the S1000. In the pictures below, you'll see where I put it up against an A100 and a Juslink flashlight. Then you'll also see where I compared it to a similar priced light which is of MUCH higher quality. This would be the "Atactical A1", which at only about $20, also comes with a "USB rechargeable" 18650 battery. To illustrate that the GearLight is no brighter than 500 lumens, I put it next to the Atactical, which on high, is 550 lumens. In the photo, you can see them side by side. The GearLight is in "wide-beam". The "A1" has a fixed beam. They're both on the highest mode, using fully charged 18650 batteries.
I'm deducting stars for various reasons. One being that on one of the lights, the o-ring that sits at the top of the threads (for the tailcap) was broken...RIGHT out of the box! (refer to the photo)
The two stars I've given the GearLight, are basically for shock resistance and the fact that for the price they're charging, it's a reasonable deal for two generic lights.
I'm not sure what else to say about the GearLight, except if you read the description and assume you're getting something of high-quality.... you're mistaken. From the packaging (which actually comes with a decent user manual) you might think it's a bit better than some of the other $7-10 lights out there. But the box and accessories, is the ONLY part of it that's above-average.
Please understand that the reasons for displaying images of the Atactical flashlight, are for comparison only. It's my intention to illustrate that for about the same price as the GearLight (even though it's for TWO lights) you can get much better quality products. This review was in no way intended as a sales pitch for a different flashlight other than the one under review.
