I'm using this as a Linux kernel development board, so i've been moving this around a bit to pop out the SD card to load OS variants with rpi-imager and opening up the cover to get to the board pins. After about 2 weeks the micro SD card locked into read-only mode which usually indicates that the maximum lifespan of the memory cells of the card have been reached; I wouldn't think loading OS multiple times as well as pushing kernels/dtb files and C program to the device would be too many write operations at this point of use. I went ahead and purchased a Sandisk extreme pro sdcard to replace it.
Also, as part of moving this device around one of the HDMI micro cables gold connector started to get loose at the white cable base and have intermittent connectivity; I'm only using one cable so tossed the failing one and used the second cable provided (also ordered a backup from Amazon that seems a little heftier at the micro HDMI connector).
Other than those few issues I have no other concerns, so gave this product 4 stars and would recommend this kit for someone looking for a rpi 4B complete kit.
After 10 failed/unstable installs I found an article that said to buy a SanDisk or Samsung SD card. I went with a SanDisk SD card and install was smooth and stable first time out. Otherwise everything else was great on this kit.
Update: the seller issued a refund for the defective SD. I would buy this kit again based on the sellers support
Update: seller reached out and resolved the issue.
…Then, the sky is the limit.
I’m actually trying to use this for a few different projects:
* Pi-hole (blocks ads, local DNS server - a pretty neat addition for my network)
* Development (local web server for numerous projects)
* XOJO apps (A smaller language capable of compiling binary files that supposedly work on one of these) - Should be interesting, and opens up a lot of uses - As it’s a powerful but easy-to-use language (not that others aren’t useful - they absolutely are, I’m just personally curious to try this specific use).
* Maybe try to make some custom IoT (Internet-of-Things, “Smart Home”) devices.
* Most likely, tons more.
This would definitely be *the* kit to get for someone that wants to learn about and/or just-use a Raspberry Pi. It’s a great bundle for first-time users as well, as mentioned - it comes with everything you need.
It comes with a fan and heatsinks, however I might recommend upgrading the fan - but not right away, no need. Well, if you know you need to - you know :)
(You can find numerous options here on Amazon, just try searching for, “raspberry pi 4 fan”) if you’ll be using this for anything overly CPU-heavy (Things like running a NAS, or a lot of multiple instances or separate apps/scripts that will be running at once).
…If you do that though, it probably won’t fit back into the case that comes in this kit, so you may have to look for another case, which isn’t a problem (or if you have a 3D printer, there are *numerous* free, already-made 3D models that you can print to make your own case - and customize until it’s exactly what you want).
Multiple Fan Modes are Possible with the Bundled Fan…
However - I must point out, that you can move the connections (easy) for the fan, to make it either run full-speed all the time, or run in a “Quiet Cooling Mode”. I changed mine over to the quiet mode, just so the fan isn’t running at full-blast when not needed. Until I do something on here that starts to raise the temp though, I’ll probably switch to always-on mode.
What’s MY Experience Level?:
On the Raspberry Pi, I do not have much experience at all - which is why this kit was the perfect setup for me. It came with the main board as well as all of the additional kit-pieces that you *need* to make things work (SD card, power supply which plugs into the wall and has a USB-C connector for the Pi connection, a fan, 2 HDMI cables a case and more).
So far, I have it up and running with just a basic “Raspberry Pi OS” (Formerly known as Raspbian…I’ll have to get used to that!). It worked the first time, and the board booted correctly - a nice surprise, no issues so far. I’ll be possibly changing the OS in the near-future as well as get started on some of the projects mentioned above.
I also have it connected with an under-$5 ribbon cable from the GPIO pins, into a breadboard (If you get this…and are new to the space, I would also recommend, if possible in your price-range - to also grab one of those random Arduino kits on here, as they’re cheap and come with lots of development components to learn from).
…I’m just getting started here, but looks pretty powerful. If you’re wondering, I have the top off of the included case so I could attach the ribbon cable to the board, but it’s still a streamlined build.
I would absolutely recommend this kit. It comes with a great Raspberry Pi board and all components to get up-and-running very fast, without buying other pieces like most other kits and boards would have you do. I can wholeheartedly rate this at 5/5 for what it is. It’d would be great for beginners, students and so on AND experienced users (since it’s mainly the Raspberry Pi that you’re buying here, it would be a very viable pro-level tool as well).
It would also be an excellent gift for any nerd/geek during the holidays. Even if someone has one already, they can always use two! I’d love to get this as a gift - another is actually already on my wish list.
