I had trouble with my display displaying 4/3 ratio so I bought this and it works as it should.
Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2014
When I replaced my CRT (old style, analog) TV with an LED computer monitor, everything was marvelous... until I realized there was no way to connect my recently refurbished VCR (which I still play lots of tapes on) to the monitor. The VCR has only RF (coaxial screw-on cable) and composite (yellow RCA connector) outputs. And the display, being a computer monitor not a TV, has only VGA and HDMI inputs. Didn't find anything that converts from RF. A cheap box that converts to VGA gave barely viewable results. A popular low-end simple RF-to-HDMI converter I tried gave a terribly limited color palette. (Apparently that doesn't matter to gamers.) And I couldn't find ANY RF-to-HDMI converter costing less than $200 that would retain the VCR image in its original 3:4 aspect ratio. Everything stretched (distorted) the image to wide screen. That's fine for some programming, but it's no way to watch Humphrey Bogart, or a series produced in the 1990s.

This unit solves that problem, sort of. It converts the input comp signal to a choice of various sizes and aspect ratios. The "PanScan" selection produces a 4:3 (or approximately so ... I didn't actually measure both dimensions). So far so good. Unfortunately, it also shrinks the picture, so an inch or so of my monitor above and below the 3:4 image is wasted. In this price range, I expect a perfect solution. It may be great for other needs, but for me it is not. Along with the 3:4 image being smaller on my 27" dia widescreen monitor than it was on my 21" CRT TV, I suppose it's an issue when dubbing tapes to disk. (Will have to research that further.)

A few other notes while I'm at it, although they are relatively minor to the disappointment above.

* Apart from the unnecessarily small size of image when Panscan is selected, the conversion of image from VCR to HDMI is fine. At least as good as I was used to via RF on my old analog TV. I suggest reading the user's guide at their website, which you'll need to download anyway.
* Runs very hot. Next to the unit, 84 degrees F. On top of the unit, 102. (A tech rep said that's normal, and units have run this way for years apparently without problem.)
* The four footpads are very insecurely attached. One peeled off as I was setting things up. Below each pad, there's a hole, so actually, they're stuck by only a very small rim around their circumference. No matter. You'll probably want to add bigger feet to it anyway, to give it more air.
* There's a quick setup slip, but the actual manual is on PDF, download it from Gefen's site.
* No on-off switch. If the heat concerns you, either unplug it or use a switchable outlet.
* The small external power transformer includes adapters for various countries' plugs. Just snap in the plug of your choice, and the power supply is like it was made for you, no problem.
* Includes a 6 ft. composite/audio cable (yellow, red, white connectors).
* If you're using it with a computer monitor and you select an incompatible low-res mode, the monitor may no longer show you the menu (because of the incompatible setting). In this case, you'll need to reset the unit. Instructions for this simple procedure are in the User's Guide.
* Before purchasing (not at Amazon), I spoke with a tech support guy at Gefen. Personable and helpful. Unfortunately, he didn't mention that the 3:4 image is reduced overall.
* For converting an already wide-screen source program (e.g., DVD?) where for some reason you don't have an HDMI output, I would think this is an acceptable (if pricey) solution.

All in all, for a TV that can serve as a backup computer monitor and interface with my entertainment computer, I figure I'm better off with a high-res TV that already includes a composite input. Unlike a monitor, a TV also includes a remote, variable sound control (although appearntly some TVs nowadays don't have a volume adjustment???!!!), and other features.

I play tons of classic consoles and capture the footage. This unit has simple video options on the device which are a lot more useful than you think!

I watched hundreds of videos and tried at least ten different devices, but I never got totally satisfying results until I tried this device. Video is crisp and smooth. I have some S-Video tapes and they convert even better.
The reason I give it four stars: It will be great if they also provide USB 3 output so I don't have to use another device. The software I use is OBS studio. I utilize two filters crop/pad to cut out digital noise at the bottom of the screen and Chroma Key to adjust contrast, brightness and gamma. I recommend this device.
