Monoprinting on gelatin plates gives a unique result popular with many printmakers. While gelatin plates ultimaely deteriorate, Gelli Arts Gel Printing Plates are actual reusable printing surfaces. They look, feel, and react like a gelatin plate, but are made of a unique plastic that contains mineral oil. They do not contain any latex or animal products. Acrylic paint, water-soluble inks and fabric paints work best to create interesting one-of-a-kind monoprints - No printing press needed! Easy clean-up with soap and water. One 8x10 inch Gel Plate.

You may wonder why I bought another plate when I already have one. I'm a little impatient with some of the techniques and having another plate lets me continue playing while paint is drying on the other plate.
I had attended a class of ten persons recently, all had brand new gelli plates from same mfg, and SAME problem with ALL the gellis. THere were no climate issues, it was neither cold out or hot out. All had been stored flat. But ALL had bubbles under surface that showed on the print. The bubbles are huge, two inches by about four inches.
Unacceptable for the high cost of these. Would not buy these unless one can gain reassurance in writing, from the company that sells them, that these expensive plates will not have large bubbles in them. It's a lot of money to not have a smooth surface so art comes out as intended without unsightly blobs outlined on the art.
Once you do enough of it, or decide you really enjoy the process, then getting the plate makes sense.
