The experience is second to none, yet I don't know if this is the future of films. I might be too old to have my vote count.
The acting is first rate; Will Smith at his finest, he really set a very high bar for his performances...excellent! The supporting cast was also excellent, together they made the story engrossing and believable. Special effects and fight scenes were cutting edge, the stunts were mind blowing, and the pace searing!
I should also stipulate that I watched this movie by myself with no distraction on a brand new LG CX 77" OLED, a state of the art UHD PANASONIC DP-UB820 Blu-ray player with dual HDMI High Speed cabling (one for Video, the other for Audio) and a new YAMAHA ATMOS receiver with an SVS sound system with dual subs. This combination of hardware can handle the massive 81GB of data in the movie.
I store all of my movies on a QNAP NAS and use it as a DLNA server and send them over CAT6 to my LG. I copy my UHD disks to the NAS as an .mkv file. Gemini Man is by far larger than any other mkv at 81GB. Unfortunately, it stalls very briefly running across the cabling (forget trying to stream with wi-fi). So I watched it using the Panasonic. If you use a NAS in this way for your movies, you will probably have to connect it directly to the TV with a high speed HDMI cable.
Gemini Man is unquestionably my new test disk to push my system to its limit. It was a glorious experience watching this movie. You'll never see a better looking production. THANK YOU DIRECTOR ANG LEE!!!
To be fair, I really liked the sequence toward the end with Will Smith fighting along side Mary Elizabeth Winstead against Gemini soldiers in the streets. The coordination was really well done but was too short unfortunately. That's it. That was the only aspect of this film that I enjoyed. Everything else sucked.
My problems start with Will Smith. He's just not believable in this role. Ex Marine turned into a world class sniper able to shoot a man on a speeding train in the neck from 2km away? There was nothing in Will Smith's performance that made me believe he was that guy. Mark Wahlberg kept coming to mind with his lead role in Shooter. HE was believable in his role but also, Shooter is simply a better film all around.
The other problem is a huge one. The painfully obvious use of CG in this film didn't mesh well with the live action footage at all. It's sad that in 2019/2020, CG for film isn't as impressive as real time graphics in today's best games. Worse, CG was used for a regular fight scene that shouldn't have required it. None of the characters did anything supernatural that would make sense to use CG to represent. Will Smith fighting against his younger self in a regular brawl should not have needed CG at all. But it was used, it awkwardly stood out as the movement of the characters are too synthetic, unnatural, without enough weight and anticipation that a fight between two real people would have in some instances. In other instances, it's over exaggerated giving almost a rubbery feel to movement. The motorcycle chase is another example of CG gone wrong in this film. From younger Will Smith scaling a wall, to him using his motorcycle to fight his older self. The CG is so bad, that it reminded me of the terrible use of CG for Neo in the Matrix 2, almost 20 years ago.
The other disappointment is the story and how it progresses. There isn't enough backstory in Gemini Man for me to care about Will Smith's character or anyone in the film really. There just isn't enough backstory or character development for me care. Will Smith murders a guy on a train. He goes out on a hill wearing regular street clothes, lays on the grass in broad daylight, takes the shot and then...he tells his handler that he's retiring. There is nothing in the opening scenes that establishes Smith to be a world class, best ever, sniper. He came off as just some guy with gun laying on a hill. We never get to see glimpses of his past jobs, flashbacks from his time as a Marine, how me made the few friends he did have...nothing. Even his partner introduced early in the film didn't last long. By the 15 minute mark, he was dead. Again, I can't help but think of Shooter as it does a much better job of showcasing Wahlberg not just as a sniper but also his character/character development r throughout the film.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead's character is pointless in this film. She's introduced and "burned" within 5 minutes of her introduction and her character development goes nowhere. The mentioned scene above that has her in a gun fight along side Will Smith is THE highlight of her character in the film and it's far too short.
Clive Owen? No. Liked him in Sin City, loved him in Children of Men, he was good in Inside Man and he was funny in Shoot Em Up. But this was not a good role for him as Gemini Man isn't a good film. He's supposed to be this tough as nails, ex marine, hot shot leader of Gemini but there is absolutely nothing in the film that demonstrates or establishes that. We're told and that's it. Clive Owen doesn't even get enough screen time to understand how much of a whack job his character is.
1*. I like some of Ang Lee's work. I even thought his version of The Hulk wasn't bad. Never liked how he got such a bad wrap for that. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon speaks for itself in terms of cinematic excellence. But this. Gemini Man? Not feeling it.
Ultimately, this movie was not just great to watch, but it is an UTTERLY AMAZING proof of concept. I want more!!

A disfrutar.
