The only child of an adoptive single mother, Allison works as a waitress, hoping one day to return to school for her master's degree in counseling. Her goal is to work with special needs children, especially those on the autism spectrum. After her mother's death, Allison finds herself alone in the world, no family to speak of, only a few close friends in her inner circle.
Cedric is one of three children from a close-knit Boston family. He works as a high-powered talent agent and has a live-in girlfriend, whom he doesn't care much for. Cedric feels a profound sense of loss after the death of his father, and feels slightly isolated from his mother after a tragedy changes his life during his college years in Chicago. A tragedy only his older brother Caleb knows anything about. I adore Cedric as a character. He is tall, dark, handsome, intelligent, and very close with his siblings. His younger sister Callie, in her early 20s, is only slightly verbal autistic, however we see the depth of love he has for her. I truly appreciated this relationship in particular, as it really added a very human, very real element to the story. Real life isn't always perfect like a romance novel; this storyline in particular was a reminder of that.
Cedric and Allison meet one day in the diner in which Allison works, and the two are immediately attracted to each other. Unfortunately, between Cedric's girlfriend and his unwillingness to confess to Allison the real reason he was in the diner that first day, a relationship between the two seems unlikely. The dialog between Cedric and Allison is humorous and real, my emotions ran that gamut throughout the entire book. There were times when I was laughing out loud and others when I was cursing Cedric's name with tears in my eyes.
There were plot twists in Gemini that I did not see coming at all, and I appreciate being kept on my toes! The entire book demonstrates the fallout of lives based on lies and how they can affect so many people that are not directly involved. I absolutely loved the evolution that takes place within the book for both Allison and Cedric. Allison's happily ever after is incredible, coming from a place of such loneliness. Cedric is able to forgive himself for perceived past indiscretions, and come clean to both Allison and his mother with the secrets he's been hiding.
Gemini was a quick, easy, well-written read I would have finished in one sitting if real-life hadn't gotten in the way. Ms. Ward creates likable, real characters that are easy to become emotionally attached to. The storyline is well developed and flows quickly and smoothly. I am happy to give five incredible stars to Gemini. Ms. Ward is an author that I have no problem putting on my auto-buy list!
