Anastasia Young is a practising jeweler and artist whose work has been exhibited internationally. Her jewelry is renowned for its challenging themes and technical complexity. Examples of her work are held in the Science Museum, London and Central Saint Martins Museum, and she has won awards for her jewellery and her hand engraving work.

Anastasia is a graduate of the Royal College of Art and Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, where she lectured and taught short courses in jewellery making for 20 years. She currently teaches at the prestigious School of Jewellery in the historic Jewellery Quarter of Birmingham, England.

In 2017, Anastasia was appointed to the board of The Association for Contemporary Jewellery, and is also involved with the Hand Engravers Association and the Society of Jewellery Historians.

I bought this in 2013 and put it on the shelf. Fast forward to 2021 when I'm finally setting up a bench at home and starting to plan projects. I'm full of MY OWN ideas and I want basic guidelines on how to execute them. Most online tutorials and even jewelry metalsmithing classes want you to start out making their projects, and they are mostly similar to each other. I've done that, gone through those steps. Now I want to make my own designs but can't find easy basic info on techniques. Luckily I remembered about this book, pulled it out... and VOILA! Answers! So, so many techniques explained clearly. I'm off to make the ring from page 118 :))) It's not terribly complex, but it's precisely, precisely what I was looking for. Very happy.

I received this book two days ago, and it has been such a pleasure to read it. I am sure this is now one of my favorite jewelry books. It has beautiful pictures, and the content is just perfect for my necessities at a very good price. This is the book I was looking for, since I realized my attraction for gemstone setting. It is not a beginner metalsmithing book, and I am glad, there is some information about the basic techniques, but it is not the repetitive pattern used on most books with 1/3 of the content describing the same very basic information. I like the chapter covering the gemstones types, it has beautiful pictures and excellent description, however I wished it was included pricing information, to compare them with some cost information. The techniques described are just what I want to learn, and the author selected beautiful and very convenient pieces that appealed my taste and show how the technique can create a beautiful piece of art. I really love the examples used, and the gallery used in this book. Even though I can understand the techniques, I wished it was included a little more in-depth detailed description for the more advanced techniques. In general I appreciate the work done on this book, and I am so glad I bought it.

Beautiful pieces! Very artistic. I've been making basic jewelry for about 5 years. This book is a step up in skill level. There are some things I can see in the photos that are not described because it assumes you would know... but i do not. Like what you need to do to hold a tiny crown setting while you cut and file it... it looks like you need to make your own wooden tools. There is brief mention in the tips chapter but not enough. I wish there were less coverage of basics and more expanded detail on the tips chapter. There are only 2 pages on channel settings so I will still probably have to check YouTube for expanded how to details. That said, I love the beautiful projects; it will be useful in advancing my jewelry skills.

Just received Gemstone Settings last week, before promised date. Quickly flipped through and was excited to see excellent pictures and layout. I've been metalsmithing for 5 years so moved rapidly through the tools, gems, etc. overviews. Then got to the meat of the book. The introductions are laid out quite nicely, it's as you start to look for more details on fabricating the settings that the book starts to disappoint. At one point there is a good pictorial description of cold connections, but I bought the book for gem settings. I also have John Cogswell's "Creative Stonesetting" which is a wonderful book. Has very good verbal descriptions, but lacks the pictorial set-by-step. Frankly, its a bit beyond me and was looking for something more accessible. As an intermediate metalsmith, what I really long for is a book that doesn't start at the beginning steps and then stay there for a third of the pages. Certainly describe specialized tools, etc. for the particular subject matter; but I think its highly unlikely that someone is picking up a book on settings as an introduction to metalsmithing. You've probably done bezel settings and perhaps tube and are looking to build technique. Gemstone Settings was on the right track with photos and layout, but falls short in guiding you to new technique. Too bad it doesn't deliver on its potential.

my genuine inrest in gemstones became significantly higher after a well placed Estate sale purchase of a unknown box and contents. I won't list the contents but the category of gemstones. As someone who wasvperfectly happy buying or receiving jewelry untill that day, this ook goes into plenty of interesting information on how and why jewlery is created. It's a well sized book with penty of photos of interesting Designer's creation. The Author,Anstasia Young is very talented with percise detailed information that clarified my view gemstones, settings, metals pratical infomration on everything from glue to gold. This is a interesting well done book but, it is not aimed at jewelers who generally have a their own professional ideas. It is a fine book for a person who enjoys looking into the world of Jewlery design with a box of gemstones awaiting design, creation. the magic of Jewelry. is timeless.

Ich kann mich den vorigen Rezensionen nicht anschließen.

In meinem Buch finden sich reihenweise unscharfe Abbildungen. Es gibt sogar verpixelte Bilder! Der Fokus liegt nicht auf der Vermittlung der gezeigten Technik sondern auf dem Zeigen fertiger Schmuckstücke. Viele Schmuckstücke zeigen Fassungsvarianten die nicht näher erklärt werden. Die Bilder der viel zu kurzen Anleitungen am unteren Seitenrand sind durch die Bank weg sehr klein und oftmals nur halb so groß wie das abgebildete Schmuckstück darüber. Man kann oft genug nicht wirklich erkennen was genau dargestellt wird.

Noch dazu ist die Qualität der gezeigten Arbeiten höchst unterschiedlich. Die vorgestellten Körner- und Paveefassungen sind beispielsweise unsauber gearbeitet. Die Behandlung von Kanalfassungen ist oberflächlich, unvollständig und unnötig kompliziert. Es würde vieles vereinfachen wenn man diese Fassungsform ausdrücklich als Sonderform der eingeriebenen Fassung betrachtet hätte. Stattdessen wird ein außen angelötetes Blech umgeklappt um die Steine zu halten. Umständlicher geht es nicht! Das Legen von kanalgefaßten Mosaikflächen fehlt gänzlich. Auf die Möglichkeit Zähne oder Krallen zu fassen wird gar nicht eingegangen. Aber das Eingießen von Steinen in Gießharz wird beschrieben! Einlegetechniken sucht man vergebens. Der Ersatz von fehlenden Steinen und die Reparatur von beschädigten Fassungen fehlen ebenso. Nirgends wird das Fassen ungebohrter Kristalle oder Stäbe für die beliebten Soloanhänger erwähnt. Der entsprechende Abschnitt über Kappenfassungen geht von gebohrten Steinen aus und entsprechende Spaltmaße kommen dann im Ergebnis vor. Das sieht furchtbar billig aus. Das Bohren von Steinen zum Zwecke der Fassung wird aber nicht beschrieben. Der Abschnitt über Wirework ist gänzlich als Lachnummer zu betrachten. Das Verarbeiten des Drahtes wird so rudimentär und unprofessionell dargestellt, daß es zum Fremdschämen ist... beim Verdrehen des Drahtes wird an der Briolette gedreht, anstatt passende Zangen zu verwenden. Das lernt man sogar in Hobbykursen gleich zu Anfang! Bei dem Hinweis auf das Verbergen der Bohrung beläßt man es, denn beim Arbeitsbeispiel wurde nichts verborgen. Das Sichern der Drahtenden soll durch Klebung erfolgen, da schüttelt man nur den Kopf. Die verschiedenen Möglichkeiten ungebohrte Steine mit Draht einzufassen werden nicht behandelt. Es läuft niveaumäßig auf eine Fädelarbeit mit Perlen hinaus. Die Bilder sind auch nicht immer korrekt beschriftet. Da werden gebohrte Rohdiamanten als "pearls" anstatt als "beads" bezeichnet. Im englischen Sprachgebrauch werden aber ausschließlich echte Perlen als "pearls" bezeichnet!
Die Liste der Fehler und Mängel ließe sich noch eine ganze Weile so fortsetzen.

Besonders ärgert mich aber die Art und Weise wie "technische" Zeichnungen eingefügt werden: Aufsichten und Querschnitte werden genau gleich dargestellt. Man muß zb. raten ob ein Drahtquerschnitt oder eine Granulationskugel vorliegt. Ein Blechquerschnitt sieht genauso wie ein Draht in der Aufsicht aus. Das sollte bei einem Fachbuch nicht vorkommen.

Noch dazu ist das Buch in Teilen mit einem anderen Buch der Autorin ("Handbuch Schmuck" erschienen bei Haupt) identisch. Ich hab' gedacht ich seh'nicht richtig als ich mir das Buch angeschaut habe! Da habe ich mir dieses Buch zum Vertiefen des Wissens gekauft und bekomme nun genau die gleichen Anleitungen in kleinerer und schlechterer Bildqualität noch einmal vorgesetzt.

Fazit:

Als Inspirationsquelle ist das Buch geeignet, aber unter einem "Guide to Styles & Techniques" verstehe ich etwas anderes. Das Gezeigte geht in der Qualität nicht über das frei erhältliche Material aus dem Internet hinaus. Es ist daher nur als grobe Übersicht und keinesfalls als Lehrbuch zu betrachten.

Punktabzug wegen der inhaltlichen Fehler, der Unvollständigkeit, der Bildqualität, der mangelnden didaktischen Güte und der einkopierten Stellen aus dem Vorgängerbuch!

The book is useful and has quite a lot of settings to get you going. I was disappointed to find the channel setting I was after was not covered in detail (just a few line drawings in a window). The false channel was covered quite well but I am still none the wiser as to how to cut a real channel setting..hohumm.

My real gripe is that the book The Guide to Gemstone Settings: Styles and Techniques, although similar in title...different date, different cover...is actually the same book in paperback. I nearly bought it thinking it may have more techniques not covered in the hardcover. I also had a problem with Steven O'keffe's book '...tips and tricks...'I was stupid enough to buy...twice...same book, different dates and different enough cover, tiltle etc. thinking it was an updated version with new tips from the 2009 issue. Come on Amazon..please don't do this, as I am not the only one...see comments... get the hardcover and softcover cross referenced so people like me, can at least refrain from becomming excited about another book by the same author

This is an amazing book that goes so much more in depth in stone setting than anything i have come across before. I love this book but i do wish it had gone more in depth with bead and pave setting. There is excellent instruction on how to do the actual setting for pave settings but very little in graver sharpening and the angles needed to hone your gravers. I find myself very reluctant to spend money on gravers and handles sharpening stones and sharpening guides because there isn't much info on how precisely to sharpen the gravers before using them. They don't come presharpened and I personally need to feel confident that i will be able to figure it out successfully before i make that investment. Other than that, this book is absolutely a home run and my favorite book purchase yet!
