Between dragons, vampires, demons, nymphs, humans and others, the stories gain shape and in each book you get a main couple to worry about. In the background other love stories form as well with very well created supporting characters.
Personally I think the Lords of the Underworld is Showalter's best series, but Atlantis is fun, well written, creative and very good entertainment.
Book 1, Heart of the Dragon, starts showing us a bit of what Atlantis is like and introduces us to a species not so easily found in romances. Darius, the dragon king, gets an unexpected gift from fate when Grace falls into a portal in the middle of nowhere and ends in his path.
Book 2, Jewel of Atlantis, brings us the demons, the dragons, the vampires and the nymphs, but the story is actually about a human, Gray, and a creature that doesn't belong to any of the species in Atlantis. While he seeks a very powerful weapon for the humans in the surface, he ends up mixed with a very precious female that many fight to keep under their domains.
Book 3, The Nymph King, shows us the other side of the sex creatures of Atlantis. Valerian, the king of the nymphs, has to go to the surface to ensure the survival of his warriors but ends up getting more than he expected. On the other hand, Shaye goes to her mother's sixth wedding filled with bitterness and is dragged out into a place she thought was just a myth.Read more ›
I bought this bundle because of the great price on Kindle, and have only been able to force myself through three of the books. I just put it down after that and went on to read a few other things. While LotU is the same author and same genre (fantasy/romance), I just didn't enjoy this nearly as well. The characters aren't developed, the women are all one-dimensional virgins, and there's really no conflict other than contrived situations the characters find themselves in. I think I've felt more angst when deciding on a toe nail polish color than I felt when reading these books. Even the sex falls flat, as it seems all of the virgins in this world enjoy a good pounding for their first experience. Blech.
I will probably muscle through the last two books in the series, as I read a few books a week anyhow, but I don't expect to find anything better than what I've seen so far. For a better series by Gena Showalter, I absolutely recommend her Lords of the Underworld books. They're really fun reads with interesting characters. If you enjoy plot-less romance novels, then Atlantis is probably OK.
Heart of the Dragon Darius and Grace
Jewel Of Atlantis (Atlantis, Book 2) Grayson & Jewel
The Nymph King (Atlantis, Book 3) Valerian & Shaye
The Vampire's Bride (Atlantis, Book 4) Layel & Delilah (Amazon)
The Amazon's Curse Zane (Vampire) & Nola (Amazon)
The first 4 are full length novels however the last one is a novella.
The third book, however (The Nymph King), kinda lost me. I just ... didn't like the two main characters and I found the plot kind of lacking. A bit unrealistic, actually. The Nymph King Valerian is supposed to be SO sexually potent that no female anywhere can resist his charms, and yet Shaye somehow manages to do just that, strictly from willpower alone. Um ... no. Sorry, you're gonna have to give me a better reason than that as to why she's moar sooper speshul than every other woman in the world. Pretending to be a block of ice isn't a good enough.
I actually found the secondary character to have a far more valid reason AND a far more interesting story for her refusal of the nymphs. She should have been the main focus, not Shaye, who, along with Valerian, pretty much spent the entire story in denial of the inevitable to the point where they were just downright irritating. Oh, yeah, there was a plot in there somewhere, but it was pretty much lost in the maelstrom of "OH I want him but I must resist because I am the ice queen and I will not succumb to my passions!" and "Oh, give up, woman, nobody can resist my awesomeness so just lay down and take it."
