I was looking to improve my knowledge of Y-DNA (specificaly) beyond the basic fundamentals covered by general DNA books. But I did not the the other extreme of advanced genetics aimed at scientists. This book falls in between which is exactly what I was searching for. Well written and, considering the topic, easy to follow. I strongly suggest you download Amazon's free sample which includes a very accurate description about what the book covers to deterrmin if its appropriate to your needs and to give you sense of the author's writing style.
Besides being a learning tool, it also can serve subsequently as a useful reference.
The book seems a bit pricey but I felt it is worth relative to any alernatives.

The author's sense of humor invites novices to learn without being intimidated. I'm an experienced investigator of yDNA within my own family and this book helped me rethink what I knew or though I knew.

I really liked how David explained YDna testing concepts and using color as examples. Very good addition to my genealogy and genetics library.

This is a well-written, comprehensive guide to understanding Y-DNA. The author knows how to explain the concepts so beginners and those without a genetics background can understand. He includes lots of charts and diagrams to help visual learners like myself. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has done a Y-DNA test or anyone thinking about doing one!

THIS IS A GREAT Book on Y DNA ! The Diagrams are Excellent! The presentation of the material which is a science turned citizen hobby and is used for serious genealogical purposes is outstanding. I like how the ‘eye rolling - head spinning’ heavily scientific details about Snips and STRs are not until Chapter 13. The comics are a bonus - I had not seen those before, there is just a few here and there and everyone doing DNA needs comic relief plus a thoughtful reminder of reality. I am not new to Y DNA, yet this book gave a new insight on how to do Y DNA evaluation and analysis, like no other before. If you are just new to Y DNA or been staring at your results for years, this is the book you need to read sooner than later.

Good introduction, especially for newbies, on yDNA testing and it's place in the toolbelt of the family historian/genealogist. Vance offers a lot of info in non-technical terms explaining STRs, SNPs, and other basics for those of us who are not scientists.
