This is a good reference to have, but, it is primarily a rubrick that defines the standards by which a genealogist's work should be graded. For those seeking certification, it is valuable to ensure your work meets certain standards. Much of it is just common sense, for example; "68. Structure. Genealogists organize written presentations and discussions of assembled research results into structured parts and logical sequences." Of course, the purpose of the book is clearly stated on the back cover and that's what it accomplishes. If you are looking to learn about genealogy or for instructions or how-tos, you will need other resources.

Most of this is old information. The bit that is new can be found online for free, and in a format that is less frustrating to read. The publishing is very poorly done, with the text typeset for a small book but printed on large pages. The text is squished in toward the spine, where it’s hard to read. If you absolutely have to buy this book for your profession, maybe try an electronic version. Otherwise get it from the library and take good notes. Not worth buying, for most.

This update to Genealogy Standards, 50th anniversary edition, adds standards and definitions related to the use of DNA evidence. Every genealogist, from hobbyist to professional, should want his or her work to be accurate, and to be able to judge when it is and when it falls short. A little book of great importance.

This book is a must have, even if you had the original edition. Whether you are a professional or just a hobbyist, the information in this book is invaluable to your success at creating a well-researched family tree, or preparing for professional status. The new DNA standards are well explained.

Whoever wrote the book (a committee) was verbose and somewhat vague in places, but since I am writing a detailed genealogy of my father's family the book's guidelines were a necessary review to be sure I don't break any rules. It arrived quickly and was accurately described. The content isn't the seller's fault : ))

Everyone should be aware of this book and read it. It makes good sense! Just like a driver's ed manual gives us the "rules of the road" so does this book guide us in doing good genealogy that will last for generations.

Professional Standards in the USA

I got this book to help me in researching my family history.
It should provide some help.
I will not know how useful it is until it has been used.
Lots of USA based information is included which is understandable, as genealogy is big there and is a registered profession. This suggests that it may not be as useful as I imagined.

Maybe good for someone thinking about starting a genealogy service, otherwise a waste of money.
