By coincidence I'd bought this the spring before hurricane Irene and this unit did not disappoint. When we lost power for a few days, the gennie ran 24x7 without skipping a beat. We were the only house lit up with heat in a sea of darkness. As far as I'm concerned it paid for itself right there. I did have a high gas bill that month, but it was better than the alternative.
Caution! As I browsed the customer photos uploaded on this site, I see someone has ignorantly and dangerously put the generator under their deck, proclaiming that this helps reduce the noise. Apparentley he/she did not read the instructions which include a full page diagram of required clearances on all sides of the generator. For the reasons of proper airflow, proper access for regular maintenance, distance from exhaust containing (deadly) carbon monoxide AND National Fire Protection Agency regulations, the manual clearly states, among other points: Clearance at the top of the generator should be a minimum of 60 inches from any structure, overhang, or projections from the wall. The generator SHOULD NOT BE PLACED UNDER A DECK OR OTHER STRUCTURE. Don't be a dimwit, read the instructions for proper operation and your safety.
If you're going to install it yourself, then you also need to buy a car battery; it does not come with one. The type you need is a Group 26R with minimum 525 Cold Cranking Amps (CCA). You should replace this every 3 or 4 years at the most, especially in climates that go through a cold winter. You'll also need to supply wiring & conduit to connect back to your panel.Read more ›
I was a hero when the power went out and the genny kicked in! Unlike the previous year when an October snowstorm left us powerless for a week.
This time I was prepared -- we had some lights, heat, fridge, and sump pump all powered. Little did I know there was a defect in the unit that would bring this comfort quickly to an end.
Day 2, evening, friends over who had no backup generator, 9:00 pm lights out, the hum of the generator stops.
I go outside and discover that the low battery light is lit and the generator will not turn over.
I measure the voltage at the battery and it reads 8 volts! How could this be?
I quickly pull the battery from our sump pump backup and wire it in. The genny starts and power is restored, but I have an uneasy feeling that this battery will soon die as well.
And it does not last 'till morning. I awaken to an unusual silence from outside instead of the usual hum of the genny.
It's Saturday and I call Generac customer support who refers me to a local dealer for repair -- at $250 per hour!
I had no choice. The repair took about 3 hours to replace a $60 Chinese-made battery charger at a cost of about $800.
After 5 months, Generac refunded around $250 of the bill as the unit was under "warranty."
Today, April 13, not 6 months after installation, the generator is again in distress. It failed during its weekly exercise operation and will not start.
I purchased this unit because it provided enough emergency power at a reasonable price -- or so I thought. The maintenance is becoming more expensive than the original cost of the generator.
I hope you have a better experience, and make sure you have a reasonable and competent service technician!
I purchased this unit from lowes Greenland, NH Store #1879. I was disappointed in the unit from the beginning. The power transfer switch is a sub-par build quality compared to Generac's Guardian series. The unit came with a lack of proper parts. Unit was Missing proper LP fuel injector. I contacted Generac it took them 3 weeks to deliver the part they failed to ship. The spark plug had been smashed into several pieces during the shipping process. After the spark plug and fuel injector was replaced the generator ran for 90 seconds before blowing a hole through the side.
Generac is a good company, however this product is defective
