Was considering ordering the non-GE off-label brand for less $$$$ but after reading the questions and reviews for those, they don't remove all the chemicals that are removed by the GE name brand product. Have never had one fail or crack in about 5 years. Our tap water tastes AWFUL and there is no taste to the filtered water. The rate of water flow does decrease with time but the water remains good tasting. Our water does have a high iron content so that may cause it to slow down faster than others may experience. We change the filter before the recommended time even though the water still tastes good for longer times, as I don't know if it is still removing tasteless chemicals after that time. Sometimes it's the things our mouths don't taste that are the most harmful. So despite the much higher price, which has gone up over the years, I highly recommend the GE brand over generic if you can afford it to ensure removal of harmful chemicals that the generic filters don't remove, especially if you have small children. Just because the water tastes good doesn't mean there aren't harmful substances in it. I think of the people in Flint MI, hoping that they haven't suffered permanent health issues, and am thankful for good clean water and the good taste and "clean" water that this filter provides.

Distill Water 0ppm
Poland Spring bottle water 70ppm
Brita filtered water 100ppm
Older GE filtered water 100ppm
Tap water 130ppm
Newer GE filter water 130ppm (this product)

Old filter works better than the new one! After changing over 4 large bucket of water, the water test still show it is at 130ppm. My old one is still better than it?!

I spent $60 dollars on a brand new water tester, and verify that it's working properly. This filter isn't working as other reviewers have stated. I didn't believe them and went ahead and bought it. I have confirmed other reviewer comments stating that the filter isn't working.

My fridge filter stopped working. We couldn't even get any water to come from the water dispenser on our refrigerator door. it was embarrassing as we had guest at the time and we had to give them bottled water which tasted like plastic. It took me a very short time to find this on Amazon. It is a great product. It fits perfectly. It only took a minute to install it on my refrigerator. They suggested you run water through it and clear the system, which we did. The water had a clean, non chlorine, fresh taste that pleased my whole family. The filter has continued to work and is providing great tasting water from my refrigerator door. I am so happy I don't have to buy bottled water anymore. It removes all of the taste of the chlorine from the water. I don't get that awful plastic bottle taste, like you get from plastic bottled water. It is a great product and I would recommend it to anyone who needs this type of filter for their refrigerator. It also costs far less than bottled water.

I tried one of the cheaper filters with the lower nsf rating thinking that it would be fine since we have decent quality tap water. I was wrong. With the cheap off brand, it actually tasted worse than from the tap. Not too sure how they accoplished that...

Anyhow, the mwf filter I got with amazon prime arived today (sunday) and the water tastes great again after running a couple gallons through it. I dumped all the ice out and look forward to good tasting ice as well.

I don't know if you get what you pay for with this genuine mwf filter but you sure don't even get your twenty dollars worth with the cheap knockoffs.

The water company performed work on the water main in the street causing brown water to flow in my house for hours. Apparently this clogged the filter because the flow rate was greatly reduced out of the tap. After installing a new filter the flow was back to normal. The new filter installed easily, didn't leak, and performed well. I cannot say if it actually filters anything meaningful (chlorine, bacteria, etc), as I do not have the willingness or ability to test, but I can say it certainly does filter particulate as evident by clear water coming out of the tap while all my faucets produced a brown soup.

I cut the old filter in half to see how it works and will try to post an image of the cross section. The filter has no moving parts. It is simply a cylindrical carbon based (I assume) tube that passes water from the outer surface through to the center. In the future I'd like to try an off-brand filter and see how it compares functionally and internally but at 40 bucks every 3 years, I can swing I new GE version. (I know GE wants you to replace it much more often but I refuse to believe that is necessary.)

I'd give it 5 stars if I new exactly what it was and wasn't able to filter AND if it where about 20 bucks cheaper.

These filters are very expensive and severely restrict water flow from the refrigerator. I was able to get about 8 weeks of solid water flow out of my first one of these GE filters. My second filter lasted about 5 days before the wait to fill a 10 oz glass became intolerable again. It takes nearly 2 minutes to fill these small glasses now. This has led to my family walking away from the refrigerator to do other things and forgetting about their filling glasses. This has not been great for the wood floor under the refrigerator as I'm sure you can imagine. We are in a new house and the water pressure ranges from about 60 to 70 psi. Without a filter you can fill the same glass in about 5 seconds so it's pretty clear where the problem is at. Our filters have in fact both been the "new" design referenced by some as fixing the water flow issue, sorry to dash your hopes. Perhaps we have just had bad luck with our first filter and terrible with our second but these items are way too expensive to try and play the odds.

No instructions on box, I thought this was a little weird not writing the 5 steps to installing the new filter and instead referring to their website.

Installing the filter cartridge
1 Fill the replacement cartridge with water from the tap
to allow for better flow from the dispenser immediately
after installation.
2
Line up the arrow on the cartridge and the cartridge holder. Place
the top of the new cartridge up inside the holder.
Do not push it up into the holder.
3 Slowly turn it to the right until the filter
cartridge stops. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN.
As you turn the cartridge, it will
automatically raise itself into position.
The cartridge will move about a ½ turn.
4 Run water from the dispenser for 1-1/2 gallons (about three
minutes) to clear the system and prevent sputtering.
5 Press and hold the RESET WATER FILTE

Did much research on filters before purchasing, and was skeptical about this fitting my model, but it worked Great! My wife and I inherited our first fridge and the filter had not been replaced for a few years.. I was worried about spending so much on the filter, but seriously, worth every penny. You can't put a price on health, and the water never tasted so clean! It seriously didn't taste like anything. That's how I know it works.

Review Time - If you have a fridge with a water dispenser and an ice maker these filters are a must have. I've bought OEM and off brands before but have stayed true to the OEM for the sheer fact that they work the best (in my opinion). The installation is easy, just take the old one out and put the new one in. Dispense several glasses of water to filter out all the gross stuff... and I mean gross. This will also reduce the sputtering when you first install the filter and start using it to dispense water. Always remember to reset the filter light indicator. As a secondary measure I like to write the date I install the new filter right on the filter so I can keep tabs on how I do (should) replace the filter.

And like GE claims this filter should take out most everything that is in our water (lead, pesticides, herbicides, VOC, etc...).

For me it's just a simple peace of mind to know that I'm using the right filter.

I really like the simplicity of this filter. You don't need to turn off anything to install it and you can easily do with with you bare hands without using specialized tools. It has never leaked and does a great job providing water filtered through activated charcoal for about 6 months. I had to admit I was curious about what was inside so I opened an old unit open to check it out. I included an image in the media section. GE uses an interesting approach with this filter. Rather than using a mesh screen with activated charcoal particles in an inner sleeve, they developed a solid, fused charcoal plug that must serve as both the particle and chemical filter. The filter canister is really thick-walled so I imagine it can withstand even intense water pressure. All and all a great product.
