Product Description

These oil-based Gel Topcoats and Stains are quite possibly the easiest of all finishes to use and achieve a "hand-rubbed" look without all the work. Application is easy with a foam brush or lint free cloth. The heavy bodied gel formulation permits the product to flow out evenly (no drips or runs) preventing uneven penetration for consistent color control. Combined with no sanding (your choice to sand or not) between coats and a quick “re-coat” time, you’ll be finished sooner with less effort and better results than ever before.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best product ever!
By Kaylee on October 21, 2016
This stuff is AMAZING!!!! Saved me thousands of dollars replacing these horrid oak banisters.

Here are some things I learned while doing my project.

1.) No, letting it sit longer won't save you time/coats. On my first piece of banister I decided that I was smarter than everyone else and I'd just let it soak in. The stain dried and I spent the next few hours with steel wool trying to get it off. Apply generously and then WIPE IT OFF after like 5-10 minutes tops.

2.) I began with a paint brush. Pshhh. No. Put on some latex gloves, then throw a sock over your hand and go to town that way. You'll still need something smaller for hard to reach areas but don't waste your time trying to be fancy. Use a sock.

3.) You will want to finish with a poly coat over top to prevent the stain from fading or coming off. But wait a few days. You will notice spots in different areas in different lights at different angles. Give yourself time to notice these spots and fix them before you make it permanent.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST PRODUCT OUT THERE
By Stan Bridgman on July 27, 2016
ABSOLUTELY one of the best purchases I have made for home improvement. We wanted to change the look in our kitchen and one of the things we were planning to do was change the color of the honey oak cabinets that seem to predominate in this area (read as 70's swag). We had tried multiple products from other well known names (MinWax, Rustoleum, etc) and we had a test cabinet (an old one that we had taken out) on which we would try them. They all turned out terrible - the finishes were uneven and even with extreme care taken, the lines of the brush were visible. Also, the finish on most of them looked like an amateur was at work (which I am, but I don't want my work to look it). With General Finishes Gel Stain, we were in love with it from the get-go. We tried using a rag (a sock, an old t-shirt, stain pads) but none of these worked as well as a good brush. This product is self-leveling and is good to the promise (even when applying overhead and on vertical application). It was necessary to spend a little more time to thin out the coat as I went, but the results were spectacular. We initially went with Java but on a whim purchase a small can of Black. The Java was a little to brown and the Black was perfect for the look we were trying to achieve. The first coat, like everyone mentions, doesn't look the greatest, but by the end of the 2nd coat.... simply amazing. I followed up with two coats of rub on Min Wax poly to give the cupboards a little more resistance to wear. Everyone who has seen the cabinets comment how great they look and that they look professionally done. I am often critical of my work, but on this occasion, I have to agree with the positive feedback. While it is a little time-consuming to do the cabinets, it cost less than $125 to do our kitchen (the lowest quote we received from contractors to refinish them was $2500). All you need is a can of gel stain (I would up using 1 and 1/2 cans), a brush (I wrapped it in cling wrap and then aluminum foil between applications - wound up using 2 brushes total), a 3M scuff pad (used 4 total - 2 coarse and 2 finish), tack cloth (3 total) and a surface on which to work - I used two saw-horses with 2x4's with heavy ply plastic under the whole thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Combined the Brown Mahogany with the Java for perfect color!
By Michelle on May 28, 2015
Great product! I combined the Brown Mahogany and the Java stain to get the exact color I was looking for. I brushed the stain on with a clean painters rag and then used the "wipe off" method with a different clean rag, as I hated leaving visible streaks or blotchy-ness during drying. I treated every coat like it was the top coat, making sure to not leave any blobs or streaks and just let a little bit of color soak in with every coat. It took more coats, more stain, and a little more time, but it was much easier to control the look/color this way.

I cleaned my cabinets first with Lysol dual action wipes and then gave it a good sanding with a 100g sanding sponge. If you mess up, 100g sand paper will take off all the stain and take you back down to bare oak, so don't be discouraged if you need to start a piece over. Always be sure to sand in the direction of the grain.

I did about 3 coats of the Brown Mahogany first to get that rich red tone, and then used about 2-3 coats of the java on top just to darken it up a bit. The hardest part was making sure all of my cabinets were the exact same shade and matched one another. I played around with light a lot, making sure to view the cabinets in the natural daylight as well as the artificial lighting that was going to be in my kitchen at night.

To help, the first 2 pictures I've uploaded of the doors are JUST after the Brown Mahogany finish. It shows the original medium oak door and then another door with about 3 coats of Brown Mahogany (wipe off method). The last 2 pictures show the finished product with another approx. 3 coats of Java Gel stain and the Urethane top coat (3 coats) on top. VERY satisfied with the results!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best way to update your kitchen or bathroom for under $100
By Ramsey Moorman on February 28, 2015
This Gel Stain is a great product. I have had several professional contractors ask me who updated my cabinets. I just tell them I stained them myself. You should see their eyes. When I tell them that it was under $100 for everything, they almost faint. I recently completed a mostly DIY Kitchen upgrade, shown below (I had the backsplash professionally installed). The total project without appliances was under $2,100.

The hardware was $2 for each handle. I also added soft closing hinges for the cabinets ($3.12 each).

Contractors have mistaken this for a $10,000 upgrade.

I also updated the bathroom cabinets as well shown below. I was able to finish the bathroom (3 coats) and put 2 coats on in the kitchen with one gallon.

I used a matte finish polyurethane for the kitchen cabinets and a gloss finish for the bathroom cabinets.

Bought to transform my bathroom vanity and it turned out good for the first bathroom.
Will I try to do this again? Answer is No!
Lost count of how many coats I applied cos each time I try to apply, it scrapes some of the previous application, and yes I waited 24 hrs between coats but had to keep touching up some scratches. The finished work looks good, but no worth the stress for me to be honest.
I’ll do the second vanity and that’s it. I had plans to do kitchen at some point but No I will not be. If you are not the most patient person, use of this product might not be for you.
That said, seems a great product.

Caution, the Java is really dark and might be too heavy for say a kitchen.

Perfect rich color, easy to use and minimal smell! Used it on our floors, applied two coats with an old sock (covered with different brand water poly after) and on staircase (using brushes), can't say enough how amazing it looks and how good it holds up to everyday use.

Easy to use. Forgiving product make sure to use a top coat clear. Arm r seal satin is what I used for that. If I was to do it again I would use cloth to wipe on 3 coats 24 hours between coats. Then 3 top coats. Foam brushes worked well but I made a few glops that way. A little goes a long way! Don't short cut the coats.
