Product Description

pH controls is essential for stimulating vigorous plant growth. The pH scale measures acidity or alkalinity on a scale of 0-14. Below 7.0 the pH is acidic. Above 7.0 , the pH is alkaline. 7.0 is nuetral. The best pH for general plant growth is in the range of 5.5 to 6.5, slightly acidic.Nutrient solution that is too high (basic) or too low (acidic) cannot be properly asbsorbed by plants. Incorrect nutrient solution pH can cause slow growth, sickly plants and low yields.

I've used it one time and it was very effective. Since purchasing this kit I've read a book on beginning hydroponics--apparently you can use vinegar to lower the PH and baking soda to raise it it you don't want to spend the money on this kit.

This kit is easy to use and works great. To start, you simply scoop a bit of the water to be tested into the small clear container that comes with the kit. You then add a few drops of the pH indicator solution, and check to see what the water color ends up being. You have a guide which tells you what pH is indicated by which color. If the pH is too high, you add a few drops/gallon of "pH Down." If the pH of your water is too low for your purposes, you add a few drops/gallon of "pH Up." I grow plants hydroponically and need to ensure the proper pH of the water I use, or else my plants they won't be able to fully access the nutrients in the water. While this kit isn't as precise as a digital pH meter, I have never had any problems with my plants so it's been precise enough for me.

I bought this pH test kit instead of a digital pH meter. A good digital pH meter is fairly expensive and a cheap meter could have questionable accuracy. Plus, I have had experience using digital pH meters at work a few years ago, and they are just hard to deal with, not as far as using them, they are easy to use to test the pH of something, but they can easily fall out of tolerance and need to be calibrated, you don't necessarily know when the reading is off and it needs to be calibrated, as in the pH measurements you've been getting were wrong for a while and you didn't know it, the probes have to be kept wet or not depending on the model of meter, not to mention they are a sensitive electronic device and you have to just be careful with them.

So therefore, I got this pH test kit and it works great. Sure, it's a regular test kit and doesn't give you the absolute exact pH like a meter would, but if you need the pH of something to be in a particular range, as in water or nutrient solution for plants, this will certainly do the trick.

But I have to say that whatever you test probably needs to be clear or close to it, since you fill a vial half full and then put 3 to 5 drops of pH testing solution to observe the resulting color change to get the pH. In other words, I'm thinking you may not be able to test the pH of Kool Aid or tea or something, but water or water mixed with plant nutrients where the color is only slightly changed would be fine.

I ordered this kit based on the other reviews but I was still a bit sceptical based on the description. Let me just clarify, this is a full control kit. It includes a test vial, a pipette, 1oz of pH test solution, 8oz of liquid pH UP, and 8oz of liquid pH DOWN. It works very well and is easy to use. the pH UP & DOWN are very concentrated so the 8oz bottles go a long ways. I have been very happy with this kit. I would suggest buying a few more pipettes though. If you are trying to use the same pipette for the pH UP (or DOWN) and also use it to gather a sample to test, you might skew your results if you are not rinsing it well. I am very happy with this kit.

Watch your PH. Only if your PH is balanced to 5 or 6 will the fertilizers dissolve and allow the plants to absorb the nitrogen and various minerals. Do not overdo it. These chemicals drive the PH up or down with only a few drops. I use a huge pot and need only 10 drops of PH down to set up my water to the correct PH. Be sure to keep these chemicals away from children.

It arrived in a plastic bag everything came as said. So how it works is you take a sample of the liquid your trying to identify into a container then add a couple drops of the ph solution(small bottle) and it changes the colors. The color to numbers are on the side of the ph solution for example if its lime green your ph is 7. But im color blind and its a little hard to tell but i ask my roomate what color it is and she tells me so it works out.But there is a learning curve which i wish i would of knew that the ph upper is way more powerful then the downer. So at first i tested the ph of my fertilized water and it said green 7.0 so i added a few cap fulls of the upper and i tested it and it went down to 4.0. So then i knew that i should just do a little at a time. Then i added 1 capful of the ph downer it didn't change at all still at 4.0 then many more 1 capfulls later maybe about 5 or 7 it finally turned to were i wanted it to be. So watch out on the upper try very small portions. Anothrr con is you cant tel exactly what the ph level is because you have to go off colors i wish it would tel you exactly 5.4.But in the end it was what i was looking for and works.

This is a great kit for testing/adjusting ph of nutrient solutions. I have tried many other testers (test papers, strips, electric testers) and this is by far the easiest to use and the most accurate. I was prepared to pay several hundred dollars for nice electric tester but now I'm so glad I didn't...testers like those require constant calibration and various solutions...this kit requires nothing at all, so easy! The ph up and ph down are highly concentrated so go easy on them! You don't want to adjust your solution more than 1.0 ph a day or you could shock your plants!

UPDATE: Ok the PH testing portion of this kit is great, HOWEVER, the ph DOWN solution is terrible. DO NOT USE IT. It is made from phosphoric acid which is bad because if you add it to a nutrient reservoir you will have massive amounts of slime growth within a day or two. Toss the PH DOWN and go get something else.
