With so much on everyone's plate and ME never thinking about furnaces and such, my husband decided to purchase and install this nifty little gauge. This gauge will tell him when it's time to change the filter in the furnace. Or, I can even see when it indicates it is time and then I can go nag him about it!! What a great deal!
The unit registers the state of the filter every time the furnace runs. A little needle points to the status of the filter which is listed on the gauge. I saw it running this morning. When in the green area the filter is clean. When the needle starts to hit the red, time to change the filter! What could be easier?
Tom said this unit was super easy to install. It took him less than fifteen minutes. He used an electric drill with a 3/8 inch bit. The gauge is installed anywhere in the blower chamber. By the way, we have a gas furnace --
The directions were excellent and simple to understand. So far the unit is working well and is accurate. This should also help improve the efficiency of our furnace because now we {Tom} will be changing the filter on time. We use fleeted throw-away filters.
Wouldn't it be nice if these nifty little gadgets were standard equipment on all furnaces. Tom wishes he would have purchased this a long time ago!
Thank you.
Pam
It's always amazed me how companies like 3M can get away with selling people a $30 filter that *might* last a month, maybe half a month, maybe 3 months.... how are we customers supposed to know when to change it?! It's just like printer companies making all their profits on selling ink cartridges, but a hundred times worse. Imagine replacing that cartridge when it's half full!
Enter this little $18 gem. Gee Eeee Emmmm, GEM. In all my days of HVAC love and trickery, how have I not seen this before?!
For one Andy Jackson and 30 seconds with a drill, you'll finally know when to replace your air filters. It's that simple. As another reviewer stated, it's an absolute shame every residential system in the US doesn't come with one of these built in.
And as a few HVAC contractors have mentioned, the cheapest better option is a huge, cumbersome $50-150 Dwyer Magnehelic gauge. Don't get me wrong... They're great. I've specified them on jobs for decades. Our maintenance guys live by them. Wonder why they don't just guess and replace the filters in commercial buildings every few months?? Because it would cost a FORTUNE. As it is, my employer's annual filter bill is over $500k! We also have 20M square feet and 135MW of turbine-powered generation on our campus, but that's another story.
Finally, a few critics here have noted the "controlled leak" principle on which this device operates will cause unfettered dirty air to enter your system and home. Folks, this leak is MINUSCULE in comparison to the existing leaks in your HVAC system. The average ductwork system in the US leaks 30%. So for an average 3-ton, 1200cfm system, that's 360CFM, or about 5x what a typical bathroom exhaust fan flows! IMHAPO, (in my humble albeit professional opinion), this unit likely flows WELL under 1cfm.
TLDR, get one for yourself and send one to Mom and Dad while you're at it... you won't regret it!
