Style Name: 3-Inch Digital Caliper Verified Purchase
The first one of these General Tools 1433 Fraction Plus Digital calipers I ordered was defective: I would move the jaws a few fractions of an inch and the display would ping back and forth all over the place, up to and beyond 66 inches and back!

Amazon, as always, was great, and I had no problem in returning it for a second GENERAL TOOLS 1433 caliper. However, the new one had the EXACT same problem!

Being a production engineer myself, this tells me that my two defective units are probably but a small sampling of a much, much bigger batch of defective GENERAL 1433 calipers. It also tells me that GENERAL's Chinese manufacturer has pretty much invested zero dollars in testing and QC for this product...

Style Name: 6-Inch Digital Caliper with Extra-Large LCD Screen
I've had this caliper for a few years now and am an occasional user of the tool (not every day). I'm not sure what all the whining is about in the previous reviews. Give me a break! Go out and check on and price a scientific vendor's gadgets and then compare! They cost a lot more than this tool and you don't get a lot more bang for that buck with their calipers.

As for General's caliper, I find the readings consistent and reliable. No, I haven't tested this caliper against a precise and known size such as found at the National Institute of Stardards and Technology (hehe). I'm not working with anything to a 3-digit (decimal thousandths of an inch) accuracy requirement even though the tool is capable of this measurement, and for home use that is more than plenty. The caliper mode also changes over for millimeters or fraction of an inch if that's your thing (instead of just decimal inches). If you want industrial grade so you can be a klutz and drop this tool on the floor or smack it around and expect it to work flawlessly, then you really don't know how to treat precision tools and this won't meet your needs either. However, for hobby, home, or small shop use this caliper is just fine. I find the size, weight, and features are nice and it is easy to use. The unit seems fairly easy to hold and use, even with all the electronics / display weighing down one end.

No squinting or eye tricks are needed here, such as when trying to read a scale or a vernier. The digital display numbers are easy to read with or without corrective eye wear. It would be nice if the display had a backlight, but it does not. For the time I've had this caliper, I've had to replace the 2 batteries that came with the unit (it has one inside as a spare for the one in the caliper).

This little caliper is quite nice, and I like the functionality of it. As another review stated, it does not have a lock, which might be an issue for some people depending on what they need the caliper for. For myself the lock isn't needed, but the lack of one is something to consider when buying.

My primary complaint on this device is the faux display that they have over the readout screen. This common practice in marketing is essentially a thin plastic adhesive that is put over the display which has numbers on it to give the customer an idea of what the readout looks like.
This is usually quite nice, but the one on this little caliper left an obscene amount of heavy adhesive on the readout, and was a bear to peel off in one piece. As it is, I will still need to soak the readout surface in Goo Gone or something similar to get it completely clean. Unfortunately, because of how this caliper works, it's not going to be as simple as just spraying the stuff on, letting it sit, and then wiping it off, as you don't want the adhesive remover getting between the parts or into the battery compartment.

I guess overall the caliper is ok if you don't mind taking the extra 15 to 30 minutes to clean the screen off (adhesive remover often requires the cleaner to sit for a period of time for effectiveness), but the manufacturer clearly failed completely when it comes to choosing the right material for the job.

Hopefully they will change this in the near future.

Style Name: 3-Inch Digital Caliper
I just received my little General UltraTech 1433 3" digital/fractional/metric caliper. I was very excited as it was my first fractional caliper, as well as the fact that 95% of the parts I measure are less than 3" in dimension. My excitement very rapidly turned to frustration, anger, and disappointment, for the following reasons:

1. The heat-sealed package was very difficult to open, requiring multiple careful slits with a razor blade knife.

2. The user manual was cut into several parts as a result of #1 above.

3. The user manual was sealed into the plastic display case near the top right side, making it impossible to remove intact, even if you didn't cut it while opening the package.

4. The user manual was penetrated clear through with the hole in the package (for hanging it on a display rack at a store).

Items 1-4 above are annoying, but can be dealt with, after all, who needs the user manual on a simple caliper? Disappointing, but not a show stopper. The real shot in the head, the things that killed this in it's tracks were:

5. Like other reviewers have noted, the vinyl sticker that has a simulated display on it had the most gummy, aggressive adhesive on it I have seen in a long while. The glue was so strong the label itself was delaminated when removing it. What a terrible, sticky mess. General Tools said back in September that they were going to change it to a static label, but perhaps they didn't do it, or my caliper was old stock.

6. Upon initial power-up my caliper flashed all sorts of numbers and gibberish. It will tell you that the dimension is 78.45" when it's open 0.3". Re-zeroing or cycling the power or switching from imperial to metric to fractional doesn't help the situation.
