This is a very handy tool to have when you don't have much room to work with. But Amazon needs to update their picture with the new model that is made in India, like the one I just got. General has decided to join all the other companies that have left more American workers unemployed so they can increase their own profit margins. Thanks.

Tap arrived packaged in a General box with made in USA on it but inside the bag and the tap have made in India on them. The quality was bad- very gritty ratcheting action with sticky/waxy film smothered all over!

I recently purchased this General 164 tap holder to use with some small M3x0.5 taps. It does not hold them very snugly at all. The chrome is peeling in the band between the two sections of knurling. I just bought a Starrett 93A and it is far superior. I would suggest skipping the General tool and go straight for Starrett.

FALSE ADVERTISING ! The picture they show for the #160R tap handle clearly says "MADE IN U.S.A.". It's really made in India. The quality on the original U.S. made tool was excellent, one of the guys I work with has a set, that's why I wanted them. But these Indian made tools are very poor quality, I had to disassemble all three of them and fix them before I could even use them, and the ratchet is really rough & loose and feels like it only has eight teeth on it. I would return them but I have already worked them over, so I'm stuck with them. Don't buy these.

Product photo clearly says MADE IN USA while product delivered says made in India. Please change photo. General Tools has bowed to competitive pressure instead of providing quality, US made product as it did for decades. So sad!

I love all General Tools. I lost this one and was buying it again.
-
If you need this size, buy the General and not another cheaper brand.
-
I prefer the solid heft - and quality workmanship - and even the weight of the General tap handles.

I bought this tap wrench on the strength of reviews of its ratcheting big brother General Tools 161R Ratchet Tap Wrench and I'm not disappointed. The wrench looks and feels well built with well-aligned parts and a handle that slides quite snugly through the body. Cheaper competitors use springy metal claws that are forced together as you tighten the screw and reviewers complain it gets harder to screw the smaller you force the claws and the screw may strip or loosen as you use the tool. With this tool, the claws are built like the claws of a drill chuck and there's no additional force required to make the claws small or large. There are actually only two claws with a triangular notch in each one. The two notches form a square that grips the tap you put in the wrench.

I assumed when I bought it that "No 0 - 1/4" meant it could hold a bit of basically 0 width, but in reality the notches prevent holding anything smaller than 2 millimetres wide. I'm guessing "No 0" refers to a bit of about 2mm because I'm using the tap wrench with a "No 1" screw extractor that's about 2.4mm. It holds the screw extractor well.

If you need to use this tool often you should probably spring for the ratcheting version of this tap wrench, but for occasional use this model is a great choice.

I've owned 2 sets of these, I bought a second one for at work. The first set states made in U.S.A. all over it. The second set that I purchased one year later was made in India. WARNING: The jaws that are made in India break all of the time. They've had to send me 6 sets of jaws now. Instead of General Tool fixing the problem they just keep sending me defective jaws. They are no longer made in the U.S.A.
