Product description
Number of Items:1
General Tools 837 6 In. Contour Gauge can duplicate any shape instantly. This profile gauge creates an instant template for curved and odd shaped profiles simply and easily. Never transfer profiles to paper or cardboard again. The contour gauge makes measuring and cutting easy. Reminiscent of a hair comb, the tool—also known as a profile comb—features a row of long, thin, moveable teeth and a perpendicular housing that holds them in place as they take an impression of the surface. The 6" long contour gauge is ideal for measuring moldings for reproduction, duplicating spindles on the lathe, fitting flooring around moldings, copying curves and a variety of other contour matching jobs around the home and shop. It fits around most common pipes and round columns and allows you to easily copy shapes to tile, laminate, engineered wood, solid wood and vinyl flooring to precisely cut flooring to match objects. The gauge eliminates the guessing of dimensions of irregular shapes. With 35 leaves-per-inch, this contour gauge duplicator assures creation of an exact replication of the copied shape. It can measure profiles up to 3-1/2 inches deep. The profile gauge has rust-resistant, stainless steel pins for long-lasting performance and greater precision than plastic teeth. This template tool also has ruler markings on the tool body in one-inch increments.

As it comes out of the box it is quite stiff in its action - so much so that the metal pins can bend - or scratch the object - when trying to profile something. Lubrication didn't help.
The tension is supplied by the two brass-colored caps with dimples on the ends that hold the whole assembly together. By CAREFULLY slipping a screwdriver blade under each end cap, both sides, both ends, and prying up a little at a time, you can adjust the tension so that the pins slide more easily. Be careful you don't pop the end caps off, I imagine you'd have a re-assembly mess on your hands...
If you get the pins too loose you can just use pliers to press down the brass cap ends again to restore some tightness. But this won't be a problem if you just go slow and easy. Now I can use this tool to profile guitar necks and anything that is delicate or fragile or subject to scratching, without worrying so much about damaging it.

The tool appears pretty well built, not with cheap pins and ridiculously fragile plastic casing. My problem, and the reason for the three stars, is that the whole purpose of this tool is to be able to easily copy a form from one medium to another, but the pins on this tool are SO TIGHT that you have to apply a lot of force to get them to move into shape. If you're copying sheet metal siding for, say, auto body work or using it to match grind patterns in concrete, that's probably fine. But if you're using it to copy shapes in more delicate material, you have to push so danged hard to move the pins into place that you run the risk of marring the source material with pin holes or even pushing the source material out of shape so you don't get a true copy. I sprayed silicone spray on the pins and that helped some, but they're still far too tight. If I had to guess (I intend to test this but haven't yet), I'd have to say it takes a good ten pounds of pressure to push the pins into shape, and that's waaaay too much for a tool of this kind.

I wish I had the 1,200 sq. feet ago!!! I am putting in wood look vinyl. The corners in my house are rounded, and some of the planks have been very difficult. Cutting a plank to be millimetres close took 45-60+ minutes when I just eyeballed it. With this gauge, it's 20 minutes at most. I would not get a plastic one that's also sold, they don't hold the shape well. This metal one is solid and firmly keeps the shape that you press it into. I used a chalk marker to transfer the shape onto the tile, then scissors and a utility knife to trim and shape. As you can see, I got the tile snug up to the baseboard, and each piece was 10-20 minutes. I am on the last 200 feet of a 1,400 foot project... wish I'd had the sooner but thrilled that i have it now!

My husband is laying vinyl waterproof laminate flooring in the entire house and this little gadget is worth its weight in gold for making exact cuts around door frames and other things. It really makes the job so much easier.

Didn’t use for a while after buying. Wish had as the pins just came out as soon as used it. Waste of money had to bin it as too late to send back. Don’t buy this junk.

the movement of the needles is really stiff. more often than not instead of sliding to ride the profile they splay out sideways when pressure is applied. i'm hoping they loosen up a bit...but very disappointed with out of the package performance.

There's nothing to recommend this gauge. It is so tight that I could barely get any of the pins to move in the center, and the ones toward the edge wouldn't budge.

Lame! The needles fall out, its wonky and you couldn't get an accurate cut from it if your life depended on it. Returned

I needed it for archaeological illustrations. It is to hard ti use and damages the pottery I am trying to work with. My partner uses it now for wood and metal work. It is acceptable for the price but not for archeological artifacts.

Works, Well Made and Price is Fair.

Very good contour gauge that should last a lifetime if used carefully. it's well made and robust if a little stiff in use. The side benefit of that if course is the shape is held securely for transferring.
Pins are nice and small so fairly fine detail can be obtained unlike my previous plastic one which is fairly coarse. The downside is that it's made of steel so best not left in damp conditions.
Price is good for what it is if you are looking for it but of course like much of these types of product chances are that a quick Amazon search will locate many the same under different names or finishes. This one seems to be fairly priced for the overall finish. I do lather it in WD40 when finished with it as I tend to be an infrequent user of it so don't want it to corrode. A bit of oil and use has eased the initial stiffness too.
Overall a good product at an entirely reasonable price for what it is.

Superb profile gauge.
Something I didnt know existed to be honest with my limited diy but has quickly become a toolkit essential.
It is absolutely superb for taking the trial and error out of cuts etc
Well made, pins are stiff but have to be to hold the shape and prevent accidental movement.
