Bought one almost exactly two years ago to the date it stopped working. Used it regularly but not every day. Up to then it worked OK, with only the rare misfire. Pressure adjustment was adequate - could be adjusted to work on metal or hardwood (on softwood you don't really need the automatic feature, just push). If you need something day in and day out, spend twice as much and get something durable with replaceable tips, it'll be worth it. If you only need it occasionally, or just want a "window breaker", it's fine. (I'm replacing this with a Lisle 30280 - it's barely more expensive and has replaceable tips, we'll see how it holds up.)

I should have known better than to order one of the cheapest center punches that I could find. After I took the punch out of the package, I did a test punch, just to insure that it worked without any problems. For the initial punch it did work, albeit a light punch. It was not until a week or so later that I went to use the punch again, and this time it did nothing, no matter how I adjusted it or how hard I depressed the punch.

Do yourself a favor, purchase the Starret automatic center punch that Amazon has listed. It will provide you with a lifetime of trouble free service.

As far as performance is concerned, it's good. There are probably some more expensive models out there that may be a bit more precise, however, I'm not personally using it for any precise work. If there is a difference between this and other, perhaps more expensive/exclusive brands I don't think it would be so much so as to warrant much higher of a price.

For the price, the performance is great, and the portability makes it something you can always have on hand if need be. Very durable and quality feel to it as well. Great value for the money.

A very nice little auto center punch. It tends to ride around in my pocket, and is ideal for the smaller softer materials (polycarbonate, styrene, brass, etc.) I usually work with. I have two full-sized auto punches, but they are too big to tote around and tend to smash plastic pieces. This one works nicely. The point is replaceable, and is a standard 1/8" diameter. I make extra tips with old cutting burr shafts - grind a small groove and add a single turn of spring wire and make your own riveting head or prick punch or whatever.

That being said, it does occasionally misfire.

I usually write favorable reviews for the products that I purchase from Amazon. But, this time, I must warn prospective buyers about the Generall Tools 87 Pocket Automatic Center Punch. I bought two and used at least one of them. That one, after just a few punched dimples broke near the point and fell off. Frankly, it scares me when I think of buying anything bearing the General Tools brand.

May I suggest an alternative? Buy an Empire Level Automatic Center Punch 2720 from Amazon. I have had one and used it for nine years. Not only has it been durable, but, with a ball-shaped upper end, it is MUCH more comfortable to the hand. Compare that with the potentially painful top end of the General Tools 87. And the Empire Level Automatic Center Punch 2720 costs significantly less.

True, the General Tools 87 has a very narrow point, which is sometimes needed. If that is what you sometimes require, buy an ice pick. I did.

Buyer Beware. Forewarned is Foreamed.

This little punch works better than I would have expected for the price. I bought it as a backup to my Starrett punch but find I am using it more. It's light weight makes it convenient to keep in a shirt pocket.

Nice exterior build.
This device depends on a slightly bent interior rod eventually finding a hole to "snap" into. I got a lemon..... the rod is straight...every time I try to use the punch, the interior rod slips effortlessly into the hole...hence NO SNAP! The snap is what imparts the punch impulse to the device..... It works perhaps 1 time out of 20. Useless! Too much pain to return. Whatever happened to quality control?

Well I guess I got skunked on this one,The rod broke after some very light use (wood. sheet metal) and now I can't even find a replacement part. I went ahead and bought a Starrett for about $10 more. This product was really nice to have and light weight but the quality and durability was poor. I was surprised when the tip came sliding out of the barrel and I could see that it had broke at the top, oh well, I guess I can still use it as a scribe.
