General has shifted production of this punch overseas. If you compare a new punch to one made in the USA, you will find a remarkable difference in quality, but not in price.
I suggest that you comb out-of-the-way hardware stores for older production US made punches that are collecting dust on the shelf. It may cost more, but this Indian made punch was a waste of money. I used this punch once, then the tip fell off between jobsites, never to be found again. While I was smart enough to buy a replacement tip at the same time, it doesn't fit. The screw thread size has been changed. The Indian made punch uses a smaller thread than the US made punch. Now I have a $28 punch and an $7 tip that don't go together. That was a very expensive hole.

I AM A PROFESSIONAL CARPENTER AND METAL WORKER AND I WILL TELL YOU THAT THIS PUNCH IS VERY POOR FOR THE PRICE. I BOUGHT MINE A YEAR AGO AND AM VERY SORRY THAT I DID. IT LEAVES NEXT TO NO INDENTATION IN THE MATERIAL AND A DRILL BIT WILL SLIDE RIGHT OFF OF IT. I RECENTLY PURCHASED A STARRETT AND HAVE FOUND THAT IT IS WELL WORTH THE FEW EXTRA DOLLARS FOR AN EXCELLENT PRODUCT. DON'T GO CHEAP, GET THE REAL DEAL!

Impressed with the quality of this punch but is extremely heavy. Use on metal only. Be aware this is not a punch to be used for wood.

When this thing works, it works well -- It punches down strongly and accurately, easily leaving a mark on most surfaces. However, depending on the angle at which you're holding it, it may not properly re-engage after the first strike. When this happens, I have to repeatedly shake it or slap it in my hand to get everything back in alignment, which gets old fast. It's possible that it's a manufacturing defect in my particular device, but who knows.

I am a steel/Iron worker and let me say this; This is one of the worst items i have had in my toolbox. I threw it away after 2 months because it frustrated me so badly. Within a week it started to rust due to exposure, i wire brushed it off and coated it in tool oil. Then about a week later "problem number 1" started. After you punch it, you cannot repunch unless you flip it around and tap the end on a hard surface 2 or 3 times. I disassembled, inspected and cleaned it thoroughly and this seemed to fix it temporarily as it started doing it a couple weeks later. I'm sorry but any hand tool which requires this much maintenance is not worth my time or money. "Problem number 2" is absolutely annoying. The hardened tip is constantly unthreading from the punch and a couple of times i have almost lost it, you have to tighten it before every use, which can become irritating after the 20th use......before lunch time. I have even tried taking it to the vise and a pair of pliers, it doesn't seem to lock on. I have thought about putting some lok-tite on it but would regret it if i ever did have to change it. On a positive note, when it wasn't rusting, sticking or falling apart, it did punch really well as you can adjust its punching pressure with the threaded bit on the heel. Locked all the way down it punched SAE 1045 very well. on SAE 2330 however, i had to punch it several times. A punch from another manufacturer performed similarly. Currently I am using a S__R___T brand punch. I thought in the case of this general item, i would get what i pay for but that was not the case. General sucks. I hope this helps people out there.

This punch started out awesome. I work as a marine electrician and need to drill holes in fiberglass, mild and stainless steel as well as aluminum. This punch did a great job for about six months when it started failing to reset the mechanism. Like several people have reported here one must "slap" the punch to get everything to line up so it works again. So i took it apart and find that there's a small, spring loaded disc the punch shaft seats into that cracked in half. I emailed general to see if i could buy a replacement part and received no reponse. It's too bad because otherwise this is a great tool. Ive since purchased the starrett 18c which so far is the better tool.

Purchased to replace my years old spring punch that was dropped on concrete breaking the tip and leaving the threaded tip shaft behind and seized. What I notice is that while the construction looks the same, this the shaft and tip move around a lot more than my broken punch. Also, the heavy/light adjustment doesn't appear to make much difference in the depth of the mark left when punching aluminum and wood. The internal mechanism and spring arrangement is different in the new punch. The image that includes the ball bearing is the disassembled New spring punch. The old model doesn't use a ball bearing.

I bought this to replace a larger, older general unit whose mechanism had never worked right. The #89 is a little smaller and lighter than I'd liker but it does the job well, the inner mechanism hasn't missed a step. However after about 100 uses, probably 95 of them in aluminum, the tip is very dull and in need of grinding into a point again. Something the US made general punch I used to use would have taken much longer to experience.
Obviously since I own a bench grinder this is an easy task but I'll be removing 1/8" or so of a non replaceable tip. I think it should have stood up to a lot more abuse.
All that said an automatic center punch is one of the most convenient tools you can own, if you're considering your first, even if you don't buy this one, buy one.
