I think they added the inexpensive sharpener as just a bit of color in a colorless package. =) I gave mine to a local grade school. I personally use the Kum Long Point Pencil Sharpener with Pointer.
They fit most of my pencils, including the Paper Mate Mirado Black Warrior Medium Soft Lead Pencils, 12 #2 Pencils (2254) and Sanford yellow wood pencils. It is too small for a a couple of pencils laying around my office, but it fits most of what I have.
I should mention that the pointed end is open. Since my pencil tips do not extend that far into the cap, it is not a problem for me. If you have thin pencils or a sharpener that creates a pointy tip, then the tip might stick out. FYI... I use a Staedtler Tub Pencil Sharpeners double-hole sharpener.
The cap is made of clear plastic which makes them difficult to see and easy to misplace. My workaround is to stick a piece og color tape on it.
Overall, I'm satisfied with this product.
- Does the job of protecting pencil tips
- Fits most of my pencils
- The tip is open. However, my pencil tips do not stick out.
- It's clear and can become camouflaged on a busy table.
The included sharpener is very cheap and does a terrible job; it breaks points and leaves a very rough wood surface. I didn't purchase this item for the sharpener so I don't really count that against the company.
Now, the protectors work for most pencils, I have a few that they won't fit onto and a few that they are too loose on. But for most of my pencils they fit. On my more narrow pencils, if I've used a long point sharpener, the point protrudes from the end of the cap. On regular sized pencils, this isn't a problem. I use a KUM or E+M wedge most of the time, with these medium length points the cap poses no problems.
It does the job. I like it. I wish it were prettier. But functional.
Here's another reason why I use them - for drills and taps. Certain sizes only (small) but these are the most difficult to protect from dulling thru collisions with other objects. I'd rather wear out several of these for brad points then buy one new drill.
Caps: They hold onto the pencil very well, though you must have a short tip (can be created with included sharpener). However, they are not very high quality and some are sharp at the tip where the plastic mold broke off.
All in all, they do what they are intended to do, save you pencil's tip from breaking off when placed directly in a bag or pocket.
