The SATA/PATA/IDE drive to USB Adapter/converter is a very versitile product for connecting a myriad of drive types (except SCSI) to a PC or MAC via USB 2.0. The product includes all that is needed to connect (power and data) the drives.

The GOOD: I have connected numerous drive types to a PC to recover valuable data from dead machines, and all have worked flawlessly. In this mode of use it is versatility - not speed - that is most important, and it gets high marks on this point.

The BAD: Very minor... 1) The AC power cord that connects to the power adapter could be a little longer in length. 2) The instructions are a little weak on detail with no photos. So-so job on the translation to English.

OVERALL: A great product for the money.

...if it came with instructions. Not so much for the adapter cables (which you can pretty much figure out by looking at the connectors), but for the mini-disk. It contains several directories with cryptic numbers; they appear to be drivers for Windows 98. I eventually stumbled across a folder with a setup.exe: It was the backup software; there appears to be a software to clone your hard rive as well.

The power cord cable and adapter are pretty cheap (as other have said): The first time I plugged it in it wouldn't connect well and the adapter got no power. I initially thought that the adapter arrived DOA; turns out, you need to exert some pressure so that the plug makes contact. There's a green led on the adapter that lits if it receives power.

Those 2 things aside, the price is incredible, and it does what it says it does. I think it took me less than half an hour to figure it all out. I was able to retrieve files from what appeared to be a dead computer in no time! Overall, a very good product!

One of my workstations bit the dust when the power supply blew. It either took out the motherboard or cpu or both as well. Since it was pretty old, I upgraded both the motherboard and cpu. I mistakenly thought the new motherboard had an old IDE port on it, but it didn't (only SATA connections), so I needed something like this to get my files off of my old hard drive. I didn't need the SATA cable or the power cable or even the external power supply. From what I read the supplied power supply was dicey, so I just hooked it up to a free power plug from my computer's power supply. The SATA/PATA/IDE to USB converter cable worked perfectly. I was able to copy all my files off of both my old PATA drives lickety split. This is a very handy cable converter to have. Much cheaper than getting an external hard drive case when all you need to do is copy files.

Data Recovery for Under $10 USD!!!

I read the other reviews before buying this adapter and was a bit concerned if it would work with PATA devices. However, buyers should know that it works with all types of hard drives: laptop, desktop, SATA, PATA (IDE)... you name it. It doesn't come in a fancy box but would you rather pay an extra $5-10 for a box? This thing is plug-and-play. Just connect the adapter to your drive (and plug power in where needed) and plug the USB end into your machine.

Windows 7 x64 recognized this device immediately. It shows up as a SATA/IDE to USB Bridge. All drives come up as "Mass USB Storage Device"

I've tested this with PATA/SATA desktop drives and a laptop drive as well. They all work.

I have two complaints:
1. the box came in a little bashed up. I'm a neat freak so I like to have my package come in sparkling new but I'll live.
2. the adapter feels a little weak. I think the plastic is a little on the cheap side but only time will tell in terms of its durability. I'll just go easy on it.

Another note: don't expect to use this as an alternative to an external drive enclosure. This unit does heat up a bit. Also, you leave your drive open to the elements without a case.

Roasted my hard drives

That's right, plural, I was dumb enough to try twice. It roasted a hard drive, made a loud crackling noise and them smoke started shooting out. Tried again with one of those older hard drives that's less important for me and the same. I am disappointed it had to happen to one of my better hard drives but I am glad to have confirm it's this product and not my initial hard drive using a lesser one.

Transparency:
This happened awhile ago. I bought this and forgot about it. Used it, it didn't work, it didn't even bring my hard drive on screen or anything. Shook it off since I didn't remember where I got it, then tried it again awhile later and instead of doing nothing, it cooks my hard drives.

If I could give this thing 10 stars I would. My 5 year old 1tb external hard drive spontaneously just stopped working. It still turned on, the fan still blew but my computer would not recognize it. I'm only slightly tech savvy but I knew that the drive was not irreparably damaged. Just not cooperating with me. I live in the boonies of Arkansas so I decided to send it into a data recovery facility for an evaluation. They told me it would cost several hundreds of dollars to recover the data and put it on a new hard drive. Knowing this was unlikely I asked to have it sent back. After much arguing. They finally did. I ordered this cable set so I could do some evaluating of my own. Took my external hard drive out of the case, plugged it up, and lo and behold my computer recognizes the drive no problem. Inferring it was the case that was the issue (PCB). So instead of being scammed out of several hundreds of dollars, I saved tons by buying this and recovering the data myself. I can't say that this would work for everyone but it worked well enough by me and I am extremely satisfied. I plan to keep these babies on standby for the future.
