I needed a reliable knife sharpener to use around the house and I decided to get a cheap small belt sander to do the job. Like the other 5-star reviewer for this sander, I took advantage of Harbor Freight sale and a coupon, and I paid for the thing a bargain price of thirty-two.

People do report belt vibration issues with these cheap sanders due to poorly machined pulleys. Luckily, I did not have that problem. The pulleys are made of plastic set on ball bearings and vibrations can be corrected with some sanding and filing if needed. Some of the reviews from HF site provide valuable tips on what can be done with the tool to make it work well and reliably for years to come.

Tracking of the belt works well and is easily adjusted but one needs to remove the black plastic side cover to be able to see how the belt runs on the pulley in the middle, where the adjustment is applied. A clear plastic window in the cover in that spot would be helpful.

It is generally expected of the cheap HF tools that one needs to do some tinkering and tweaking first to make them work: it's a tradeoff for their low price.

Yes, of course, a new tool should function out of the box without extra work, but you get the added satisfaction of buying it cheap and fixing what the original makers missed in their famously speedy manufacturing process. My sander, after a few essential adjustments, worked fine out of the box.

Sander comes with a single 80-grit belt, which is good for general coarse sanding. For sharpening knives one needs belts of finer grit and perhaps a leather belt for shiny finish.

I just bought this from harbor freights for $31 with a 20% off coupon. I'm not sure if the other guys who bought this have no clue about operating power tools, but with a few minor adjustments, mine was up and running perfectly. It rattled initially, but after tightening the bolt that held the tension adjustment roller on, it was smooth and relatively quiet. I'm not sure if the one reviewer knows how to track the belt properly. You're not suppose to turn it all the way to the right. You adjust it back and forth until the belt is centered. I haven't had any problems with mine, and I was able to sharpen both my cold steel machetes with ease. Much easier than using a puck sharpener and for $31, it's a high value.

I bought this based on some of the reviews.

Mine doesn't align the belt in the center, even though the tension adjustment is as tight as it can be.

It works, but barely. I'm sure there are better for the same price.

my review is based upon my projected use of this sander, a somewhat more than casual owner and user of knives. Pocket, belt, kitchen, truck, knives everywhere. been picking up knives for 60 years starting as a cub scout. over the years i have bought and tried pretty much every way to sharpen a knife there is, whet stones, diamond whet stones, sharpening steels, carbide sharpeners, fancy chef electric sharpeners. If i really worked at it i could get a moderately sharp knife but never a really sharp, paper slicing, shaving sharp knife. well, along comes this cheap belt sander, plastic wheels, light weight construction but highly recommended belt sander. not sure i would want it in a machine shop or production shop BUT about $ 35 of amazon belts and a 2 minute you tube video later I am now the proud possessor of a seemingly endless quantity of razo sharp, paper cutting, face shaving knives! truly amazing

I use this as a knife sharpener and will also use it for a hobby sander for making small models. It works like a charm out of the box as a knife sharpener using 400 grit belts, and a leather belt. It is lightweight so I can put it in a cabinet and pull it out when necessary. I was able to reshape a serrated steak knife that tore meat into a smooth steak knife that could cut paper in about 10 minutes.

Pros: It's painted green. The motor operates. Thus far there have been no dismemberments or fatalities resulting from its use.

Cons: because Harbor Freight was sold out of this sander, I opted to spend the additional money for the identical item from this company. Shipping was slow. The attachment hole to the bed was not even drilled, let alone tapped. Thus the bed can't be attached. It's as though this was a factory reject.

I purchased this through Amazon and this revue does not reflect on them.

Perfect for my uses. I make wooden toys and I use it every time I'm making something. It's heavy so it stays in place and it's just a solid machine.

I knew coming from Central Machinery (aka Chinese slave labor camps) that the quality was going to be low, but I didn't need a world class device and the price was right. Occasional knife sharpening was all I needed to accomplish and I didn't want to pay more than $100 to do the same thing with a more expensive product. I didn't have the same issues others had with this machine like wheels being out of true. My main problem is the side door to replace belts is hard to put back on, and I had to sand a bit of material off of the spark guard that goes over the top spindle because it was interfering with changing the belts, something I have to do frequently.
