The Universal GPS HUD Head Up Speed Display KMH / MPH Speeding Warning Plug...
IT-8012A worked as soon as I plugged it into the cig lighter. The on/off button on the power plug that goes in the cig lighter socket is such a great idea.
The HUD comes with a reflective tint for a spot on the windshield but in my opinion is way too big. I am thinking half or even a quarter the size they send would work better. I say this because the reflective tint is pretty dark and the HUD is generally pretty high on the windshield glass. I move the HUD unit as far forward to lower the display as much as I can and this seems to work really well.
I currently use this HUD unit in any of the vehicles that I am currently driving, as a portable unit and this is working out famously well. For this reason I have just let the HUD reflect off the bare glass. Doing this, however, does allow a "GHOST" reflection from the second glass surface to appear. It isn't really bad, especially during the day but seems to be brighter at night. Even so, some adjustment of the angle the HUD device faces the glass lets you hide most of the "GHOST" reflection under the actual first reflection, and you don't really notice this as much.
When I had changed cars some years ago, the automobile I traded in had a digital MPH display that I really liked. The replacement car only had the analog (meter type) display and I missed the digital display a lot. This device gave me two great advantages over the OEM dash. First, I was now enjoying a Heads Up Display on my window where I could simply glance to see my speed. I didn't realize how much of a strain it was to use the OEM dash speedometer until I drove with this HUD device. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! I would recommend this for anyone that has trouble seeing the dash speedo.
The second advantage was this device has no influence other than how fast the car is actually moving, to report your speed. Speed is determined by GPS satelites and Accuracy is far better than the OEM speedo, especially if you have changed tire sizes over the years. I put this in the car and immediately went looking for one of those portable police radar speed monitoring signs... lol.
The big convenience is built in to the HUD. The speed that is displayed can be adjusted for more accuracy, however, the speed the display indicates I found to be quite accurate.
As for my car that did not come with a Digital display in the dash, this is way better as a HUD. Having the MPH on the window in easy eye sight is so much better, much easier to see/read.
The only thing that I would like to see is a manual adjustment for the brightness of the digital display. It does have an eye to dim the display at night but it still seems brighter than I'd prefer, but thats just my preference. I don't think any of the HUD units have a manual dimming function. I may experiment with some tint over the display to dim the brightness a bit.
My opinion is this is the coolest thing you can add to your car for not a lot of money. It would make a cool gift or an item for someone who has almost everything, after this, they will have everything. Checking the speed is much easier and is actually cool just glancing at the window above the dash. The small foot print of the HUD unit is not really obtrusive nor unattractive on the dash and gives you an accurate GPS sourced speed visual in actual time that you can use to check speed accuracy on any vehicle because of it's portability. I said actual time but at start up it takes a fraction of a second for the logorythms to figure out all the data, then you are there. My review
( UPDATE: I am still very pleased with this GPS Speedo. In fact, when my dash lighting went out in my pickup truck, this unit saved the day and I just watched the speed on the windshield.
A note worth mentioning.... The buttons are not the best and on occasion, may stick. If the button sticks, it will make the GPS stop functioning. To make this more interesting, when the button is stuck, it will look like it is in the normal position. If your unit is not working, turn it off and press the buttons to determine if a button is stuck. You will have to help the button come back out to release the switch and let the speedo work again.
-- I also had an issue where I had a car battery go dead. When the car began to run, the GPS Speedo would not work. I unplugged it for a few days and plugged it in again and it come online and working. I had to unplugg the unit to drain any residual power and kill any random memory before it would work again. But, alls good, THUMBS UP!! )
SECOND EDIT 081018 This is a second edit. I have had this unit for quite a while now. It is still working just fine.
I have one caution, and it is not a bad one.
I have tended to forget to turn the unit off. When it sits idle, you have the single zero (0) on the screen. over time, and it has been years now, that digit will burn in and become less bright than the others. I am guessing the numbers are floresent and that will dull down just like a tv screen (tube type) did. My recommendation is to turn it off when you are not using it.
