I do verse by verse expository preaching. To prepare myself for Genesis, I purchased 3 high-rated "conservative" commentaries that I researched online. I did this to glean from an array of sources. "The Genesis Account" was a fourth one I purchased, but was hardly mentioned in reviews and commentary lists. Now it has become my "go to" resource which I did not know would happen. Jonathan Sarfati not only shows scholarly exegetical considerations and stays with the literal recognition of a six day creation and a real worldwide Noah flood, but also weaves in information which meets and refutes the philosophy that the world must be seen through the Old Age influence lens of naturalists influencing Christians, instead of the other way around. He also touches on "form" and "documentary" philosophies in a way that brings out the most important considerations. So on p33 where he says "It is primarily a history book" he shows this to be true, and gives evidence to see it as accurate history at that.
Unlike, for example one of the commentaries I bought which is "The Book Of Genesis" by Victor Hamilton which is touted as one of the best "conservative" commentaries on Genesis by a lot of folks, I have not found any disappointing surprises with Sarfati's work. I think of Hamilton's odd assertion on p. 53 under Problems In Interpretation; Hamilton wrote, "And whoever wrote Gen. 1 believed he was talking about literal days. Now, over the last few centuries science has shown that it is absurd and preposterous to think that the universe was created in one week."
But with Sarfati's information and insights, I see others like Hamilton making absurd and preposterous moves with such bold naturalist "perspectives" of scientific data, and then Sarfati quickly going for checkmate in his more carefully handled insights into what science has shown. Sarfati did the same with Hamilton's "whoever wrote Gen. 1," making a strong case for the classic authorship of Moses.
Whether your presupposition is long age, or short age--poetic or literal, a mixture, or an "I don't know," I recommend getting this book. It has valuable insights to add to your thinking process.

Exhausting, but extremely rewarding reading. It really does wonderfully combine a theological, historical and scientific study of Genesis 1-11. I have a solid background in all three areas, and appreciate the monumental and meticulous effort that went into each chapter. I learned more from this book than from any three by equally excellent authors (and I learned much from them as well). I often had to just stop reading, as tears of worship to our great Creator obscured my vision. Now THAT's a great book! Definitely worth the money.

I love this book. We decided to do a Bible study on Genesis which is what prompted me to purchase this book and I'm so glad I did. From the forward on, this book is so informative and helps you to understand and learn about our beginnings, how God set His plans in motion and how they are working today and will forever. Genesis tells us about the origins of everything, the origins of life and how we all came from an original human pair, time, space, matter, the earth and entire universe, sin, death and redemption. If you can't believe Genesis, then you can hardly believe any of the Bible. Johathan Sarfati helped me see, for instance, how miracles are not a violation of natural laws, but are an addition to His natural laws. For instance, Mr. Sarfati says "natural laws" are descriptions of the way God, the divine Lawmaker, upholds His creation in a regular and repeatable way, but conversely, miracles are God's way of operating in His creation in a special way for special reasons. Then to help you understand what he's saying, he uses Newton's First Law of Motion which states that objects will fall in a straight line at a constant speed, IF no unbalanced force is acting. But there is nothing in the law to prohibit unbalanced forces acting, otherwise nothing could ever change direction. Then he goes on to say if God exists, there is no truly isolated system so God could certainly bring other forces into play in addition to the normal ones, thereby saying there is no basis for disallowing miracles unless one cold prove that God doesn't exist, and such a universal negative claim is unprovable. The reason I brought up miracles is because there are so many throughout Genesis and the entire Bible, including miracles we are even seeing today. I truly do recommend this book for a deep study on Genesis, however, a good understanding of Genesis will also help you to understand so much about the entire Bible and the workings of God.

Jonathan Sarfati has written what I consider the best commentary on Genesis for our modern scientific world. Why would I say that? Because he marshals the best combination of the highest view of Scripture's accuracy, authority, and relevance for today with the most advanced arguments involving scientific explanation in relation to the origin of the cosmos and humanity. He demonstrates with both wit and clarity that Genesis can be trusted as God's witness on how He brought the universe into being in the space of six 24-hour consecutive days and rested on the seventh day. Sarfati is simply unmatched in his ability to see through evolutionary arguments to their hollow core and challenge the most stalwart old-earth creationists on their blatant inconsistency in interpreting Genesis 1-2 as anything but a straightforward account of how God made the world. Our origins matter! And our churches, our children, and our parents need to be equipped to answer the challenge's of the modern world that is bent on making the text of Genesis look foolish and outdated. As Sarfati powerfully explains in very readable prose, the reality is that evolutionists and those who accept "deep time" according to an evolutionary timescale have the disturbing tendency of using sloppy, logically flawed arguments that ultimately bring disrepute on the inerrant Word of the living God. Read this and be blessed. You will not regret it!

An Valuable Source of Young Earth Scholarship
Reviewed in Canada on August 1, 2018Verified Purchase
A great source for access to some of the latest Young Earth perspectives on Genesis. This commentary is hefty and covers a lot of ground as it explores the first eleven chapters of Genesis from a literal Young Earth perspective. Lots of very helpful insight into Young Earth exegesis and evidence.
I took one star away because a sometimes it meanders into territory that seems to me to be of secondary importance to the primary discussions on early Genesis - ex. Hebrew as the original language of Adam, a defense of capital punishment (although this arguably IS important ... it just struck me as a bit extraneous to the general direction of the commentary) - while at the same time skimming lightly over a few topics that are very central to the current Creation debates - ex. the death of the dinosaurs and post-flood animal migration receive only cursory treatment.
Admittedly, I read it as a Young Earth defense first, and only secondarily as a textual commentary on Genesis. Maybe that skewed my perspective
If you're looking for an exegetical commentary on Genesis, I would not recommend this. It's more of a supplementary commentary than a primary commentary. On the other hand, if you're looking for an up to date discussion of Genesis from a Young Earth perspective, this is a great resource, regardless of your position, and deserves a careful reading.
