Palmer becomes fascinated with the man's story, and is challenged by his assertion that carefully preserved oral tradition can be more reliable than published "facts", especially when a severe bias is involved in the reporting. Palmer discovers this for himself when he is assigned a story concerning a kidnapping in which a white socialite claims a Black man driving an SUV snatched her baby right out of the stroller. In the process of uncovering the truth of this incident, Palmer both gains notoriety and further infuriates the editor, and from that point the story becomes extremely exciting.
This is Gwen Richardson's first work of fiction. She explains that her interest was the result of a 1999 New York Times article on the Lemba people, and her disappointment that there wasn't more follow-up. Although she asserts that developing this theme was her main objective, this novel is also a powerful description of the social and cultural dynamics in present-day American that makes it so difficult for highly-qualified African American journalists and other professionals to escape the strictures of racial stereotyping and general bigotry. This is both an entertaining story, and a relevant one.
"The Genesis Files" is the story about Lloyd Palmer, a reporter for the Houston Ledger who once upon a time ago dreamed about making a difference. However, his dream turns into a nightmare when at every turn he's marginalized by Ed Jackson, the newspaper's racist editor. I love how Gwen hit the ground running. She introduces the likeable Lloyd early on and we get to see him in action as a fair-minded, caring husband, father, and reporter. He's written beautifully with such depth you feel like you can reach out and touch him. He is unequivocally the star of "The Genesis Files" and I could easily see a feature film based on this character. On an aside, Denzel Washington would be perfect for the role.
Lloyd adeptly covers one heartbreaking incident after another, struggling to bring integrity to the stories that all too often put African-Americans in a less than favorable light. I later learned that the stories featured in the book are based on actual stories that took place in Houston. One that stands out is the case of a wealthy white woman who blames an African-American man for kidnapping her baby. Lloyd chooses to stand up to Ed and valiantly uncovers the truth with the help of his colleague, a white reporter who at one time believed Lloyd was exaggerating about his plight at the Ledger.
While interviewing residents at one particular crime scene, Lloyd meets Hamisi, a member of the Lemba tribe--a black tribe in southern African which traces its origins back to Moses' brother, Aaron, through DNA markers. Hamisi has a life-changing impact on Lloyd. Gwen creatively weaves in the subplot featuring Hamisi and Lloyd's relationship, wherein Hamisi challenges Lloyd to continue to pursue justice while at the same time serving as a guardian angel, leading and guiding Lloyd with words of wisdom that eventually aid Lloyd during the climax of the story wherein Lloyd discovers someone is out to kill him. Who is that someone and will Lloyd survive to write another story? You have to read the book to find out!
It is A "Must" Read!! Entertaining yet so Realistic!! Fact but yes, Fiction!! For instance, FACT: One quoted in the book, Lloyd stated to Charles (his co-worker & friend, which happens 2B white), "you could no more understand what its like 2B A Black Man in America than I could imagine being in your shoes."
So, if you are looking for a Great Read, knowledge along with twist & turns, then look no further, this would be your "Book"... Trust me on this one, it was well worth the money!! Well worth the Read! Loved it! Looking forward to more reads from this Author..
