Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

The second of Victor P. Hamilton's two-volume study of Genesis for the NICOT series, this prodigious and scholarly work provides linguistic, literary, and theological commentary on Genesis 18-50. Beginning with Abraham's reception of the three visitors and his intercession before Yahweh on behalf of Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen. 18) and continuing through the end of the Joseph story (Gen. 50), the overarching theme of Hamilton's commentary is Yahweh's faithfulness to his promised word and his covenant commitments to those whom he has chosen to receive that promised word. Special features of this commentary include its serious attention to important matters of biblical translation from the Hebrew language into English, copious footnotes that direct readers to further and more extensive sources of information, and frequent references to the New Testament writers' reading of Genesis. Hamilton's work will greatly benefit scholars, seminarians, and pastors who seek solid exegesis of the Bible's foundational book.

About the Author

Victor P. Hamilton (PhD, Brandeis University), now retired, was professor of Bible and theology at Asbury University for more than thirty-five years. He is the author of major commentaries on Genesis and Exodus as well as "Handbook on the Historical Books."

This is a really good two volume commentary on Genesis. I like it better than Gordon Wenham's two volume work for several reasons: 1) It is easier to read. 2) There are many points where Hamilton focus on applying the text to the New Testament and to the practical Christian life, 3) you don't have to have a knowledge of hebrew to access this mammoth work. So if you're doing a Bible study on Genesis or if you're preaching through it, then this is the top of the line.

This was a very good and interesting read. It is very different than most popular commentaries. This book is heavily focused on linguistics and the etymology of the words used in the original scriptures. It is very objective in that the commentary is a very factual analysis of these things in order to determine what the scriptures say, at face value, from the original authors. From my experience, most popular commentaries take a translated scripture at face value and then pick and choose from the content to build or support certain dogma. This book is virtually void of any dogma. Assertions are factual and extensive references are consistently provided. I would characterize this book as somewhat academic in the level of analysis. I did not attempt to grasp every details presented because it goes much deeper than I care to go. However, this books has a plethora of very factual and insightful statements that one would never find anywhere else except in such an analysis. This book would never make any best sellers list, not even within any Christian subculture. There is no spiritual milk here in this book for young believers. It is solid food, like a thick steak; if it is only fitting the persons who are mature enough to chew on the facts. The factual objectivity in this book makes it suitable for ANY truth seeker, regardless of their faith or religion.

This volume is good and informative. I usually prefer a much deeper and detailed commentary. It does add nicely to others I use.
