Installation was straightforward. We were able to use the existing bracketing from the old opener, which eliminated what is probably the most difficult part of the installation. We have an 8' door, and so had to purchase the Genie 1' extension kit. The kit's directions could have been better-written; we wound up spending almost 90 minutes getting the rail and belt assembled and it should have taken, like, 5 minutes. Once that was done, the entire install took about an hour, including mounting the safety-beam devices, the wall panel, the wireless keypad, and programming the remotes (and the truck). We were able to re-use existing wall panel and safety-beam wiring, again eliminating what would probably be one of the more hassling portions of the install.
The unit is quiet and quick - the garage door itself makes far more racket than the opener. Operation is smooth throughout the cycle, although the ease-down during close is a bit gentler than the somewhat sudden stop when the door hits full-open.
The instructions (which can be downloaded from the manufacturer's Web site prior to purchase, if you like) are printed on a gigantic poster, which is a bit inconvenient.Read more ›
We were able to use the older Series 2 controllers with it as well, so we have plenty for all the cars. Have only had about 6 months so way to early to report on reliability. We got about 10 years out of the screw drive.
I was thrilled with the installation. The instructions were out of whack with reality by only tiny details (like which bag to find which parts in). But overall they were clear and concise. Lots of great illustrations gave me a lot of confidence. Beware the Safe-T-Beams need to be installed or the opener will not close the door--a detail that I didn't see pointed out in the instructions, and is difficult to discern from the tiny red blinking light that indicates a general fault with the opener.
The opener is QUIET. I didn't buy it because it was quiet, but it is a nice side effect.
The electronics in this modern opener are a great upgrade from my 25 year old opener. The two remotes are small enough to be keychains, and the wireless keypad for outside is great.
Programming was relatively easy, although some redesign of the colored LED's would be nice. I think five little LEDs with actual labels would be easier than two LEDs whose combination of on/off, blinking and color are supposed to mean something. The obscure codes are hard to follow.
We'll see how many years this opener will last and how trouble free it is. But I'm thrilled with the installation and operation so far.
BUT: beware of remote controls. I had problems using this with my 1 year old, Genie Branded remote control, and Genie branded keypad, and even worse, with the remote control that's built into my car (2006 Acura). All of these exhibit the same sort of symptoms: the door will open eventually, after a couple minutes of sitting in the driveway with the engine running, fiddling and button pressing. Luckily it comes with its own set of 2 remotes and one keypad, but if you want to use it with Acura HomeLink, beware.
Even the remote controls that came with this package don't trigger the door instantly, like my 10-year-old Genie opener did. There's about a 1-2 second delay before the door starts opening.
I would have hoped that a newer Genie garage door opener would have been MORE responsive and MORE compatible with my car than one that's 10 years old.
EDIT: After owning this for a year, we still have a love-hate relationship. I love that it's silent and decently fast. I love that it detects motion and turns on the light for me. I hate how it turns on the light several times per night, when nothing in the garage is moving (I have a webcam in the garage). I've gotten used to the remote control issues, but it's still annoying that it's not instant, like my 10 year old opener. I hate how it trips my circuit breaker every so often when I try to open the garage door (I'd estimate that this has happened 5 times in the past year).
