About Genie Nakano
Genie Nakano was born in East Los Angeles, California. In addition to being a writer, she is also a performer and yoga/meditation instuctor and has a MFA in Dance from UCLA. She danced professionally for many years and was awarded the California Arts Council Grant for five consecutive years.
She began her writing career as a 9-year-old, writing secret journal entries. Her professional writing career began in 2005, when she became a journalist for Gardena Valley News with her column Genie's Lamp.
Then she discovered haiku and tanka and became instantly hooked. She has been published in many international tanka journals.
She experiments with movement, dance, props and music when performing poetry regularly at open mics and spoken word events.
This is her first haibun and tanka tales book. She has also authored, "Genie's Guide to Gentle Yoga" and another tanka book, StoryTeller, which will be out in October 2014.
