If you're tired of tuna that tastes like wet cardboard, try this. I'm not young, and this is the tuna we used to have when I was a kid.

Sure it's packed in oil, but it's healthy, monounsaturated olive oil, and you can always squeeze most of it out, because the flavor remains in the tuna and not in the oil.

This tuna doesn't require much seasoning, but I put in dill, thyme, black pepper and sometimes chopped celery and sweet pepper. Rice vinegar (milder than the regular stuff) or lemon juice round it off. Great in a salad, or add a little mayonnaise for a fantastic sandwich.

This is the REAL tuna.

Unless you're a health nut, tuna in olive oil is almost always preferable to that in water. And Genova is the best of the normally priced ones. (there are some super-expensive imported brands in a jar, but they cost as much as fresh tuna) For a quick meal, I like to open a can over a salad mix, complete with the oil, then add some fresh lemon juice, salt and pepper and that's it! A quick, delicious healthy meal.

Having worked in the canned seafood industry, I sampled this product at work for consistency, quality, and taste. It was EXCELLENT back in 2007. I soon relied on this product for lunch (with Ritz crackers, Genova Tonno was very, very good) and also sometimes for snacks. I'd buy them in bulk here on Amazon at reasonable prices.

Having worked with canned tuna, I can tell you the prices of the "commodity" have gone way up across the board for light tuna (e.g. skipjack) and white tuna (e.g. albacore). This is due to increased fishing cost and decreased supply of fish. As sad of an issue as overfishing due to the trawling methods, the reality is we're seeing this reflected in the cost and quality of various seafood products, most notably via the traditional 6oz cans being downsized to 5oz first by Starkist followed by other shelf stable seafood manufacturers.

So this Genova Tonno product USED TO BE chunks of tuna in extra virgin olive oil with a nice balanced amount of salt. However, this product is now watery chunky tuna that has a bit of olive oil in it. And in case you didn't know, Genova is owned by Chicken of the Sea, who is actually owned by a Thai based company called Thai Union, which has its own packing facilities in Thailand. THIS IS NOT ITALIAN TUNA, do not let the name fool you. It is Italian-style, and like most of Chicken of the Sea products, Genova Tonno is packed in Thailand. Genova products are still very good and of a decent quality, but it just is not what it used to be because of the rising costs.

Given the higher prices of this product, I no longer recommend this due to the $2+ per 3oz can price tag. This used to make for a relatively healthy, affordable and delicious lunch or snack, but it is now not a very good value.

This is some amazing tuna - hard to describe why it's so much better than regular tuna. Has a rich and bold tuna flavor without the smelly and overly fishy flavor and is complemented by the not too olivey olive oil. People say to drain the oil...WRONG. If you do this, you are missing out. Both the fat of the fish and the fat of the oil are good for you. The fish provides Omega 3s EPA and DHA, while the olive oil delivers monounsaturated fat that actually helps you to burn fat. Don't waste good olive oil.

Also, why is this item unavailable?? I need it now!

11-11-15 Update --> This product is extremely inconsistent. There were times when it was perfect as described above and other times when there are little bits and pieces of tuna, strange strong flavors and many texture differences. I'm not sure they know how they want the tuna to taste or if they are consistent in what parts of the fish they use. I hate to have to let this one go, but having ordered probably 10 cases of this in the last couple years, I would rather have a consistent tuna product. Loved the price too!! Let me know when you up your quality control and I'll buy again.

130 calories, 0 carb, 14g protein, 2g saturated fat (6g healthy fats), 30mg cholesterol. high in omega-3s, free of any preservatives or fillers. if healthy foods are what you're after and you're not afraid of deep sea fish, this tuna is a very good choice!

if flavor and texture are what you're after, on the other hand... this tuna is still a great choice! this is the only olive-oil packed tuna i've tried so far, and i've liked it so much i've stayed put (i've heard good things about progresso's, which is similarly priced, and some brands that are out of my price range-- frankly, i just can't afford to fall in love with a $32 can of tuna...)

the first thing you'll notice on opening a can of this tuna is that the contents smell *good* -- not rankly fishy, not oily, not acrid or stale. it's yellowfin, not albacore, and the flesh is pink and comes in thick, meaty layers, not watery bits and pieces the way some tunas often are packed. the texture is succulent-- moist without being watery and rich without being greasy. the flavor is good, too-- the tuna itself has a very satisfying meatiness to it, fine tuna flavor heightened with a bit of salt, and the olive oil gives a little green sweetness at the same time. it's the only tuna i've felt compelled to describe as "beautiful" right out of the can... also great in casseroles, on canapes, in tuna salad sandwiches, etc. it has a robust flavor that stands well on its own and also performs well alongside other ingredients.

of course it's a good idea to keep an eye on the amount of fish you consume, particularly tuna, which has been documented as containing high levels of heavy metals in several studies.
