This omnibus contains the first three books in the Genshiken series of manga, a comedic slice-of-life series concerning a group of otaku in college.

Although thick, this book holds itself together well enough. Single volumes may be more comfortable to read in some cases, but buying the three volumes included would end up being more expensive in most cases, and this collected edition is built well enough that one can read it without taking any special care to the condition of the book.

If you're up on Japanese otaku culture, and know what otaku means, you'll probably like this manga. It's a slice-of-life style story that details the protagonist's journey into the world of otaku via the Genshiken club as he moves throughout his years in college. The characters are fresh with diverse personalities and the art is excellent. The translation *seems* accurate and the English flows smoothly. Also, there are nice translation notes to help with some of the cultural differences. The binding is solid and it's easy to read this large omnibus.

I can't wait for more. One of my favorite manga series!

Lastly, this manga inspired an anime. There are two seasons published by Anime Works/Media Blasters. They are slow paced, but faithful and endearing.

Great series! Based on the Anime series of the same name which came out before the manga series (at least in the US). If you saw the Anime, the manga follows it closely but it stands on its own. Excellent inside look at Otaku life while in college. Done with good humor. I like the art design in both the manga and in the Anime which are very similar. The art is very realistic and the characters actually look Japanese. it is not in the usual "Big Eyes" anime style. I like it very much. The stories are very realistic too. The characters feel like real people. There are lots of references to other anime and manga which most people will not get as some of it is rather old and obscure. The writers are good about explaining most of the references in the Translation Notes.
I highly recommend both the manga and anime series. Very enjoyable and funny look at what is means to be Otaku in Japan.

A good 3 in 1

An interesting view of a university club of otakus, manga and anime fans, and cosplayers. It is interesting to see how the relations evolve in this group, especially with outsider
Lots of fun moments.
Only thing is it focus too much on how Kousaka is drawn to the erotic side of this world, its not direct and frontal which is a good thing, but It would be nice to see him have other interest on this beside that

In a fashion, this is the manga prototype to Big Bang Theory, but far more relatable to otaku than science/comic geeks. Each character has some measure of depth, enough to keep you interested in even the most trivial of life moments they have to endure. I've been more a sci-fi/fantasy otaku than slice of life for years before I picked this up, but somehow its depiction of awkward youths with a fixation on manga and anime just enthralls me. It's rather unsettling how captivated you can become analyzing these characters and wanting to hate some, but understanding where they're coming from. Any fan of manga or unrepentant otaku in general should give this series a read.
