I love this Book. I am 73 and I know Jane Brocket is much younger. But her writing takes me back to a gentle and kinder time. I was
born to emigrant parents, so my mom taught me the gentle art of Domesticity. Wear it out , make it do, or do without. They went trough the depression, and 2 wars. She made patch winter blankets from old discarded wool suits. I still have one from the 40,s. She also made pretty crochet blankets and doilies to beautify her home. Well I am enjoying reading this book, I love the Gentle art of Quilting too. I learned of her books thru Jenny of ELEFANTZ blog. She does beautiful hand work and is having a year of Domesticity 2015.
These Ladies take me back in time, and I am loving it .

This book is wonderful - it's a revelation! The idea of the title, 'The Gentle Art of Domesticity' sounded so boring. But I heard about it from a friend and so got onto the hold list at our library for the book. I LOVE IT! It is an amazing book filled with all sorts of information and it is endlessly interesting! It is a visual feast that lifts your spirits just by browsing the incredibly colorful and cheerful illustrations. There are so many book recommendations in it I hope I live long enough to read them. In the monochromatic taupes, blacks, browns, creams, whites, and stainless steel of the 2000's, it assures me that liking bright cheery colors is okay. Reading it is like sitting down with a friend and being encouraged to look at the world around you and expand your creativity...to see with new eyes. I'm taking this book back to the library and buying my own copy!

A wonderful, intimate, chatty read through various domestic arts! The writing style of the book embodies the subject matter;the tone is warm, comforting, and personal. Has anyone else noticed lately that out there in blogland, many writers are appearing who write about this subject? There seems to be a longing in our "modern" world of stainless steel and black kitchens for coziness, for color, and for personal creativity--in short, for the arts of the Feminine, now that most women find themselves in the marketplace. This is not a "how-to" book; it is a series of brief "chats" which are very well written and huge fun to read. It's a book to curl up with on a cold wintry night in front of a fire in the fireplace. You will feel as though you are having a long and interesting conversation with a girlfriend about the way you wish you could live. The book is packed with wonderful photos, drenched in delicious color, and the design and layout of text vs photos is superb!
Yes, the author does remind the reader that she has higher education and degrees--but who wouldn't feel a bit defensive writing such a book in an age like ours? Readers will either consider it an anachronism or a door leading into a wonderland of creativity, growth, and nurture. What makes a house a real home (more than a place to sleep and keep your stuff)? That is the subject of this delightful new book by Jane Brockett.

I just loved this book. I'm one of those domestic goddesses who don't work outside the home, and also does many crafts, including quilting, jewelry-making, knitting/crocheting, decoupage, and a few more. I'm also a killer cook. The book was written for me.

This magical book beautifully shows the stream-of-consciousness that comes with creativity. Not only did it let us know that it's all right to be a homemaker, but also gave me many, many new ideas of things I'd like to do/make. (I immediately sent away for a can of Golden Syrup from Great Britain after reading one of the recipes calling for it.)

I have already given this book as a gift to two creative friends, and they too have loved it. This is a book I will read again and again, with a cup of tea at my side.

It now holds a place on my bookshelf with others I love to peruse on a rainy or snowy day. Reading it is like chatting with a likeminded friend who also enjoys cooking, baking, reading old books, and creating items for home and family.

This is not a "how to" book, if you want lots of recipes and patterns then you will be disappointed. However, if you want to "read to know you are not alone" and be inspired with beautiful pictures and the ponderings about creating a warm and cozy home... you will love it.

I have now read it cover to cover and it will always be one of my absolute favorite books. It is beautiful to look at and a wonderful read. It touches on the many things I have done over the years to make my house a home and fill my days with the irreplaceable peace that comes from the "gentle art of domesticity". I will eventually purchase all of Jane Brockett's books. She has a new fan in me!

Oh I just love this book. Her photos are gorgeous, and I love the writing. She's got a very soothing way of seeing the world. It's certainly not going to gell with people who are career-minded, or for those who want diagrams and recipes. The book does not have many recipes, or any patterns. But you can get those anywhere. What this is, is a homage to the domestic life. I am no longer able to be a stay at home mum, as I do not have a lovely Simon-type husband to do the paid work (only a non-lovely ex-husband), but home is where my heart is. Thank you Jane, for a gorgeous book.

I thought this would be a crafting book with ideas instead it is a book filled with lots of beautiful pictures, the text was so drawn out. The author was constantly telling us about her degree and education, it is kind of like she is ashamed of the domestic arts and needs to validate herself with her education. I did not learn a single tip trick or idea from this book, it was an unfortunate waste of money.
