Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered release containing a pair of albums from the Prog Rock band. Out of Simon Dupree & the Big Sound came Gentle Giant and these, their first two albums for the Vertigo label, were released in 1970 and 1971. The band's Progressive style was a complete change from Simon Dupree's Pop/RnB sound, but a new wave of fans in the UK, US and particularly in Europe ensured that for years the group had a healthy live and recording career. Beat Goes On.

By Wayne Klein HALL OF FAMETOP 500 REVIEWERVINE VOICE on May 26, 2013
"Gentle Giant" and "Acquiring the Taste" has been remastered, reissued and repackaged numerous times to the point to drive most fans of the band insane.

The latest reissue from 2012 by BGO uses what sounds like the same tape provided to previous reissue labels (for example the two minor flaws that crop up constantly on the reissue of "Acquiring the Taste" are present here as well but those flaws were not on the original vinyl). That's both a good and bad thing--the good news is that the mastering here by Jack Thompson (who often works on the BGO reissues) is quite nice with good dynamic range and no weird EQ choices. It sounds exceptionally good and, given that analog to digital transferring equipiment as improved, I don't doubt this would beat out the earliest reissues.

The bad news, as mentioned, is that those two minor flaws are here.

This reissue sounds better than the 2006 reissues mastered by Eroc which added some minor compression. The 2006 reissue by Repertoire done by Eroc also had its own new flaw added (during the track "The Moon is Down" if I recall correctly)caused during the production of the CD. That's not here on this edition.

There are excellent liner notes by David Wild as well as the original liner notes by producer Tony Visconti are included as well.

The booklet also includes lyrics (as did the original issue on vinyl and multiple CD reissues).

Should you pick this up again? Not if you're happy with the editions of this album that you already have but it does improve on the 2006 remasters and the transfers sound at least as good (if not better) than previous editions.

If you're going to pick this up, this is a good set with a solid transfer of the tapes, nice notes and remastering.

One of the greatest prog-rock bands of the 70's.It's good to have these two albums remastered. They sound better than the original CDs on the Vertigo label.
