Although it is the overwhelming technical virtuosity of Gentle Giant that I respond most favorably to; I have to admit that this 1970 debut (along with Acquiring the Taste, 1971) is an absolute favorite. I really can't nail it down to one single thing; my guess is that it is some combination of the haunting melodies; baroque period classical; loads of mellotron; and the more "rocking" nature of the music. In general, the complexity is there, yet it is stripped back a bit more than that on albums like Octopus (1973) and the overall sound is very warm.

This initial lineup included Derek Shulman (lead and backing vocals); Ray Shulman (electric bass; violin; guitars; lead and backing vocals); Phil Shulman (saxophone; trumpet; recorder; lead and backing vocals); Kerry Minnear (Hammond organ; mellotron; mini-moog; acoustic piano; cello; tuned percussion; lead and backing vocals); Gary Green (electric and acoustic guitars); and Martin Smith (drums and percussion). Supporting the group is Claire Denis (cellist on Isn't it Quiet and Cold?) and Paul Cosh (tenor horn) on Giant. Even off of the starting block, this was a group of superb skills and there is some great ensemble work on this album. The individual playing is great too and there are some ripping solos on the Hammond organ and electric guitar. The vocal harmonies are also very sophisticated and would become a hallmark of the classic Gentle Giant sound.

The seven tunes on the album range in length from 1:40 to the comparatively lengthy track Nothing at All (9:08) and present a nice mixture of English progressive rock, classical, Magical Mystery Tour period Beatles; English proto-progressive rock (Procul Harum/Moody Blues), and even a tiny smidge of the European avant-garde. In general, the trademark Gentle Giant complexity is present on this album, although presented in a somewhat rawer and simpler format. There is greater emphasis on "bittersweet" melodies, and at the opposite end of the spectrum, wild solos on the electric guitar (Jimi Hendrix style) and even some heavy riffs (Why Not?). Speaking of which, Why Not? Is a fantastic tune that features some great jamming and even lapses into a sizzling blues-rock workout - something that would have been unheard of on albums like The Power and the Glory (1974) and especially Free Hand (1975). The occasional use of synthesizers is also a pleasant surprise and they would be featured to an even greater extent on Acquiring the Taste. Although very different in sound to the other tracks, Isn't it Quiet and Cold is very lighthearted and a lot of fun to listen to. The album closes with a very Jimi Hendrix-ian adaptation of The Queen. Simply great stuff from beginning to end.

All in all this is warm and inviting debut album that is very highly recommended along with the superb Acquiring the Taste. For those folks that are interested in the trademark Gentle Giant complexity, the albums Octopus; In a Glass House (1973); The Power and the Glory; and Free Hand are all excellent examples.

Although not their best album, yet an indication of things to come. As with any of their first eight albums, this one takes at least five - six attempts to just start liking it. The complexity of their composition and rhythm as well as their at-ease use of the entire spectrum of incompatible musical genres makes it difficult to comprehend it instantly. But don't give up, you will be well rewarded in the end. My favorites are Nothing At All/ Why Not. Nothing At All is really beautiful, both music and lyrics. In the slow balladic mainline, very melodic and quite simplistic, the vocals are accompanied by a good acoustic guitar in a very romantic manner (the lyrics reflect the mood too) and then interrupted by a great rock-n-roll theme, teasingly quiet at first, it lures you in and goes forte with dual guitar and high-pitched vocals. That, in turn, flows into a drums' solo, and this is one of those rare cases when drums sound like a musical instrument (if not like an entire band). And right in the middle of it comes a piano, classical-sounding in the beginning and turning into avant-garde, along with the drums, the most unlikely combination of the two, nearly perfect in its juxtaposition. Why Not springs out of the previous one, even the introductory line is non-standard - full band on the second iteration. A catchy rock theme is followed by a medieval one and then by a good guitar solo. First time a medieval theme is used in their composition. The final jazz-rock instrumental resembles Deep Purple's Lazy (rather the other way around, Machine Head was released in 1972, two years later). Definite Five Star

I remember a friend playing this record at a party I was at in the early 70's. I loved it.... forgot all about it till now.... I love Gentle Giant. I now have all of their music.... I am a great fan.... This is their first recording and if you fall in love with this... you will want all of their music. Gentle Giant is not for the ordinary listener... They are an aquired taste... fantastic.

I love Gentle Giant. I needed this disc to complete my collection. Very good debut recording. Although it is not quite is good as their later releases, it is still worth getting. It does have the studio version of " Funny Ways"( one of their big showstoppers live) I think that they were finding their sound. History proves that their sound was great. I say if you like G.G., get this.

I stumbled onto this band through the "Recommended for you" option on Amazon.com . I was a little hesitant, I've been burned before, but as a HUGE Prog-Rock fan I am constantly looking for missed music from the 70's era. Man-o-man what an absolute delight! Strange, unusual, a little bit quirky, but very, very good! I highly recommend the albums "Gentle Giant" and "Acquiring the Taste" together as they are both extensions of a similar sound of Gentle Giant. Hope you enjoy....

The beginning of a long history of great albums by this phenomenal yet somewhat bypassed English band. I love it. Will always be an album I break out from time to time and reflect on. Great band. I would rate this among my top 3-4 Gentle Giant albums of all time.
