absolute failure, should be recalled (updated)
on August 1, 2014
I wanted to update my old review. As of late 2016 every new filter I got over the last 2 years has been stapled in addition to glued. No more failures. However given that some people still report failures it means that some old product is still in circulation. My advice is to inspect the filter before install. If it doesn't have the 3 staples at the top and bottom platforms then return. I experienced no failures with the stapled vriaty.
Now I don't know if the failure applies to all Aprilaire 213 or just the ones sold by some of Amazon.com resellers. I will be posting some pictures as a picture is worth a thousand words, so please check those photos to get a better idea about the kind of failure I am facing.
I "upgraded" in June 2012 and the first 2 times I loved this filter. Easy to install. Smaller package to ship from amazon.com and no comb to worry about in the attic.
However 6 months ago when replacement time came I realized that the filter has failed. The filter material itself is glued to a plastic panel from the top and bottom that slides into the appropriate rail in the HVAC system. This meant that for whatever duration of the filter there was absolutely Zero filtration as the accordion was flat at the bottom of room it is housed in. Now the failure was not immediate as the filter itself was dirty with dust particles. But I have no idea if it worked properly for 5 weeks or 5 months as I don't climb to my attic except for filter replacement.
I did call Aprilaire at that time and the person on the phone was extremely pleasant. Informed me that they'll ship me a replacement for free and that they have strengthened the attachment between the filter material and the anchoring system with new glue and added staples. at that time (6 months ago) I replaced my 2 filters (both failed then) with what I just received from Amazon.com.
Today I did the replacement again. This time with the filters I received from Aprilaire directly. Both filters have failed again (see photos). There is no evidence of staples and the glue is minimum and clearly failed. So this must be the older version before the new enhancements. However 4 out of 4 filters is a 100% failure rate. Aprilaire should have issued a recall and made sure none of the older style filters as sold to customers directly or indirectly. What's the value of a filters that doesn't filter!!!
I'll do my best to remember to update this review based on what I see when it is time for new filters. Don't forget to look at the photos. And now excuse me I'll have to go call Aprilaire again and let them know about this problem for the second time.
