I have a 2000 Honda Civic DX that just rolled 100k miles. I bought it not too long ago with 90k (I was told it was 100% serviced) and it took a little bit of effort to shift or a few attempts to shift when started in the morning, even though the temperature was 60+ degrees. I drained the fluid and it was very dark whereas I noticed the new fluid was clear. Immediately after changing the fluid I noticed it shifted easier when first started up. The car seems to shift much smoother and I noticed a slight increase in fuel economy. Very reasonable price and definitely improved the quality of ride.

I have always been told to use Manufacturer specific fluids for your car. Well, it has never hurt me in the past, and this time was no different. Honda's will run for a really long time. They will run even longer if you treat them right. With this...the price was right and it works like a charm. The fluid I removed was not dirty. In fact...it appeared to have very low miles on it. I decided to change it just for piece of mind. Take care of your Honda and it will take care of you. Happy motoring.

After some research I opted to stay with Honda's MTF as opposed to Royal Purple or other competitors just to eliminate any potential problems. The vehicle I own could not be easier to change MTF in. All in all I think it took me 45 minutes and that included jacking my car up on stands and rotating my tires whilst I waited for the old MTF to drain. If you have even considered changing your MTF fluid (mine was 7-8 years old) do it. The new fluid made a world of difference. Gear changes are much smoother and the vehicle is just more enjoyable to drive.

I've run this Honda specific MTF, and Redline Full synthetic gear oil (I think I had 85W-140, but I don't remember) in my civic 5 speed. Comparing the two, this was half the price ($20 vs $40 for 2 quarts worth), and the shift quality with the Honda fluid is very good.

I'd suggest changing your transmission oil every 30k miles to be on the safe side, considering its really cheap and makes your shifts nice and smooth once again.

I've never had any issues with metal flakes or grinding with either fluid, so they both work well. Honda's fluid does have the benefit of being formulated for Honda cars, so that may give you a sense of insurance.

I drive a 2001 Civic EX 5speed and I'm at 162,xxx miles. I bought the car from the second owner at 106,000 miles. So I figured it was about time to change the transmission fluid. The previous owner said all fluids were changed at 100k but you know, you never know unless you see it being done or you do it yourself. My car never had a shifting problem except on rare occasions when it's straight up my fault. It only grinds rarely if I'm going from 2nd to 3rd at or near redline. But with regular city/conservative driving, no problem at all.

I think the previous owner told the truth about doing the fluid changes. My transmission fluid came out like black engine oil that still had a lot of life left. For 60,000 miles with some abuse (this is my first car) for the first 30,000 miles, not bad. By the way, make sure to clean your drain and fill bolts. I noticed metal shavings on my drain bolt.

After changing the fluid, I didn't notice a huge difference. The only difference I noticed is smoother downshifts. especially in the lower gears.

Well, I'm glad my transmission is in good shape and wasn't in dire need of a transmission flush. I highly recommend this if you have a manual Honda. You can't go wrong. I'm probably going to do this every 60-70,000 miles.

If you live in a dusty or hilly area, or you do a lot of city driving, I'd recommend you do this 40-50,000 miles. My car takes 1.6 qt for those of you with the 7th gen Civics. Two quarts is more than enough for our cars.

UPDATE: 12/10/2014
Well, all I can say is, it took me a week of driving to really pick up on the improvements this easy maintenance process made. My car feels young again. Not only has my shifting improved, my whole drivetrain seems to run more smoothly down to my wheels. The car will coast further.

Its the recommended fluid for the S2000 for a reason. It was wet, slippery, light golden brown in color, and smelled like success and speed.

Its been circulating around the inner workings of my 6 speed transmission for a few thousand miles now. The transmission feels buttery smooth and clearly enjoyed its drink of Honda MTF.

Save yourself a trip to the dealer and some money.Just changed the tranny fluid in my 2008 Si and she`s running smooth.I have tried Amsoil and Pennzoil.Honda fluid is deffinitly better than the Pennzoil and the Amsoil did not seem any better. So I will stick with the Honda fluid. For some reason Honda manual tranny fluids work better than the name brands on Honda`s.In my other cars over the years( Nissan,Toyota, and Ford) I have used royal purple and red red line with great success.

I bought my car 4.5 years ago, and changed the tranny oil. It is a civic lx with the 1.7L engine and manual transmission. I have driven about 50,000 miles and decided to change the transmission oil after the axle broke. The fluid that came out of the transmission was just as clear, and clean as the fluid that went in after 4 years. There were no metal flakes, no burnt smell, it was still viscous, and looked new. I can't say much about the other stuff out there, but this has worked great, and I will continue to use it.
