Personal opinion...This item is an afterthought, not like the other deflectors I have purchased/installed. Recently installed one on my wife's new Chevy Silverado, you can tell that there was an effort by Chevy to make the vehicle a good fit for accessories. NOT with Subaru!!! It is obvious from the design, instructions, and make-shift installation equipment, that this was a poorly thought out "oops, we have a market but did not plan for it". When you are finished installing this item, there will be SIX visible screw heads on the outside of the deflector. On all other vehicles I have installed deflectors on, i.e. Chevy, Toyota, Dodge, all screws/bolts are internal and out of view). Yes, I installed it correctly! In my opinion, this is NOT a manufacturer's item!
Unfortunately I believe if you want a deflector for your Subaru, I think you will have to buy this item.
In all fairness, except for the screw heads and tape on my paint job (hate that!),it looks pretty good. I like the white Subaru lettering! I just want you to know what you are buying.
Also, after ordering the item, all of my message traffic from Amazon/retailer, i.e. shipping updates, narrated the correct item but ALWAYS had a photo of a roof rack. I was pleasantly surprised to receive the deflector and NOT a roof rack.
Installation was not difficult. Propped the hood open with a shoebox, started with the two hard-mounting brackets, then lined up the included 3M tape once those were in place. Took the deflector off, mounted all the remaining brackets on the 3M tape, then working from the center outwards screwed everything down. Once in place, it is extremely solidly attached and I do not see carwashes nor highway wind having even the slightest effect on it. I believe the 3M tape will remove easily and harm-free if you decide to take it off, so don't worry about your paint. I chose to use the extra 3M patches to put down beneath the rubber half-balls just in case they vibrated or otherwise annoyed my paint, but I wouldn't have blinked at just not installing them either.
Definitely recommend the purchase if you have an XV and want your hood to not be destroyed.
The instructions are barely helpful. You could probably figure it out by just looking in the amount of time it takes to decipher the simplistic instructions.
As stated by some others, I will probably be looking for metal replacements for the cheap plastic screw insert/spreaders.
Don't over tighten.
Hey, this is all the choice we have right now and does look pretty good once on. I didn't use the washers on the top black screws. they are meant to keep the screws from scratching the plastic, but they don't anyway and I felt a firmer grip without them.
1/1/15 UPDATE: Added one star, loving it. Absolutely no issues. Not loose, doesn't whistle, looks as good as the day I put it on. Very happy with this purchase and despite the cheap looking hardware, it works great. It's been through summer and now sub-zero blizzards, quite a few high pressure car washes and shows no signs of damage or wear.
The Hood Protector lines up perfectly to the hood. Leave screws loose until all are threaded into the fasteners. There is a little bit of flexing and bending involved to get all the screws in. Be careful, the mount points will be very easy to cross thread or strip out with over tightening. I used a cordless screw driver with a very delicate clutch at the lowest setting, finishing by hand.
Along with function, I think the protector adds a little flair to the XV's appearance. I would have preferred an applied vinyl tape protector like the one I installed on my wife's 9-5 wagon years ago. It had no breakable parts and did not affect the slipstream as much as this one will. This device could easily be vandalized by the random hooligan, but living in the NH backwoods, that risk should not be very high.
