I chose this atlas because it seemed to be simpler overall. I especially wanted fewer maps overall so that my children can more easily find the basic information they might be looking for at this point. I also wanted plenty of political maps with different colored countries, because those are so easy to "read" for younger people learning the shapes and locations of countries (or states). I was happy to see that there is also really great information about landscapes, geography, and more -- all of it presented on very clean pages (so much "kid-oriented" stuff is too busy for my tastes!!!!).
It is true that it is very heavy on the United States, so if one is looking for more world coverage this wouldn't be quite right. But for us this is just one atlas and geography text among many that we will use as we learn about the world. I am happy with its strengths: simplicity in layout, limited but relevant (and current) maps, extra useful information for thinking about geography.
