Roman geometric patterns radiate symmetry and order. Drawing the patterns is not just a question of mechanically copying the work of someone else square by square, but of understanding the underlying structure. The patterns are built up from simple elements which seem to ‘grow’ and develop in an almost organic or living way. This book is arranged as a series of drawing exercises. There is no better way of appreciating the skill and imagination of those artists than by drawing their designs yourself. To ‘feel’ how a cross ‘grows’ into a swastika pattern which then ‘grows’ into a complex interlocking design is something which can only be experienced at first hand. This this little volume shows how to reproduce as drawings, some geometric borders of Roman mosaics. It uses drawing as a way to appreciate the underlying geometry of rectilinear designs. The range of examples seems limited, and the color photos look like they were taken on an overcast day. There is little reference to serpentine designs or the creative manner in which meandering guilloche borders intersect without visual confusion. Still, a useful aid in creating copies of borders for modern application.

What a neat booklet this is. The Author has a fascination for patterns and how they are constructed. It all started when he was not allowed to take photos of a Roman pavement, but he wanted to record it for later usage. So he sketched it out. Then he played around with grids of squares to see exactly how the patterns worked.
He has gone on to explore many such Roman designs, and these are illustrated and explained, even to the extent of what size of grid one would need to reconstruct it, along with the basic pattern motif, and how this pattern builds.
I think that this would delight many Mathematicians, as well as being a useful resource for Quilters, Patchwork designers and Mosaicists.
I bought it as a Used book on Amazon for the princely sum of 1p, yes really, ONE PENNY. I also paid £2.80 for P&P, bringing the total to £2.81. Actually the postage on the packaging was a lot less as it is a slim booklet, but at the cost of just 1p I can hardly complain!

Roman mosaic patterns explained (but not guilloche)

A very helpful little guide to the way in which Roman mosaic geometric patterns were designed. This both enables the principles, often quite simple, behind very complex-looking to be understood and also to be copied. One star dropped because there is an amazing cop out: braided designs (guilloche) are assigned to the last page and it is suggested they be done freehand! These are very common and attractive features of Roman mosaics. I have since found how to do these via excellent online tutorials. The basis for a running design of 2, 3, 4 or more braids, plus the interwoven design (guilloche mat) can be perfectly well explained, so should have been there.
