G. K. Chesterton (1874-1936) was a prolific English journalist and author best known for his mystery series featuring the priest-detective Father Brown and for the metaphysical thriller The Man Who Was Thursday. Baptized into the Church of England, Chesterton underwent a crisis of faith as a young man and became fascinated with the occult. He eventually converted to Roman Catholicism and published some of Christianity's most influential apologetics, including Heretics and Orthodoxy.

G K Chesterton seemed very knowledgeable of Shaw and his political leaning with Socialism. Interesting to know his concerns for women and the poor. He saw Socialism as a remedy for the poor and women and the issues they faced in the 1800s. Highly recommend

An intimate writing regarding an interesting man. Mr. Chesterton's labors help to reveal the pen behind "St. Joan" and "Man and Superman."

I used to be read all his plays when growing up in Austria, absolutely gobsmacked by his ideas and sentences - nothing has changed. So, remembering and expanding on that experience reading this book was a most enjoyable and welcome undertaking!

Just saw a play, "Chesterton vs. Shaw," which introduced me to the book. Great book - Chesterton is so astoundingly insightful, always edifying.

You can't go wrong with Chesterton; particularly when he is describing one of his contemporaries. Like the majority of Chesterton's biographies, this book won't tell you many "facts" about GBS, but it will present a solid, complete, and enjoyable picture of Shaw as a man: giving his opinions and criticizing them.
I only give it three stars because the page layout is - frankly - defective. The print is offset to the outer side of each page. If you can ignore this (I cannot), the book is perfectly accessible.

One literary titan's view of another. This is heavy going if you aren't familiar with the two writers already.

You have to like reading biographies to work through this one, he is a different and unusual character and the book gives you a good inkling of life in those times. His writings are more than worth while reading.

If you need a thorough introduction to GBS, then this is a taster.

I am never quite sure with GKS what is meant to be serious and real, and then what is outrageous and unreal.
In this book he gives GBS the serious attention he deserves and he tries in much of the book to be more sober than usual and to keep his wilder flights of fancy under control.

I needed this book as fighter needs a trainer to take on the works of GBS, which I stumbled in to after going to see St Joan, then reading the play and its long, long preface.I read more plays and prefaces, and was grateful for the voice in the corner.

Long-winded Victorian prose that tests the patience of the reader. One gets the impression that Chesterton is just full of himself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent biography written in the style of its subject

If you enjoy a well turned phrase or a finely couched paradox then you will love this biography of George Bernard Shaw. This is a biography which, while it does not shrink from the critical when it deems it appropriate, nevertheless, in overall terms honours the genius of its subject by affecting the wordplay and artistry of Shaw himself. Wonderful prose befitting the great man.
